FLUENCY FIXER TEACHER GUIDE
Station Kit / Grade 5
The Philosophy: Fluency is not just speed; it is the combination of accuracy, flexibility, and appropriate speed. By structuring our screener into 4 progressive tiers, we can pinpoint the exact math fact cluster where cognitive overload occurs, allowing for highly targeted small-group intervention.
Screener Administration Guide
Administration Options
• Timed Track (Rate-Based): Allow exactly 5 minutes total (approx. 3.75 seconds per problem) to measure rapid, automatic retrieval. Have students draw a green line when 5 minutes hit, and let them finish untimed in pencil to isolate accuracy.
• Untimed Track: Use purely to measure accuracy and tier confidence. Excellent for anxious students.
Teacher Script
"Class, today we're playing Fact Breakdown! Think of this like finding which areas of the multiplication map you have fully unlocked. Start with Tier 1 and work down. If you run into a 'Boss Battle' (a fact you don't know yet), skip it and move on. Ready? Power up!"
Qualitative Look-Fors Checklist
While students complete the assessment, walk the room and check off behaviors for struggling students. This contextual data is as valuable as their final raw score.
Physical Skip-Counting / Finger Tapping
Student counts fingers or nods head rhythmically (e.g., tapping 6 times for 6 × 4). Diagnostic: Student relies on additive strategies; has not transitioned to associative retrieval.
High-Friction Retrieval Delays (> 5 seconds per problem)
Student stares at a single equation for several seconds before writing. Diagnostic: Facts are in long-term memory but retrieval paths are weak/un-indexed. Needs strategy cues.
The "Reverse-Order" Block (Commutative Blindness)
Student gets 4 × 6 right instantly, but halts or skips 6 × 4. Diagnostic: Relies purely on rote verbal memory string rather than visual/spatial array models of commutativity.
Eraser Exhaustion / Guessed-and-Checked Work
Signs of multiple erased attempts. Student lacks self-monitoring strategy to verify if an answer makes sense (e.g., writing odd numbers for even factors).

🏆 Double-Double (4s): \(4 \times 7 \rightarrow\) double 7 (14), then double 14 (28).
🏆 Half and Double (6s): \(6 \times 8 \rightarrow\) do \(5 \times 8\) (40) plus one more group of 8 (48).
🏆 Nifty Nines (9s): \(9 \times 7 \rightarrow\) do \(10 \times 7\) (70) and subtract 7 (63).

How to Play "Grid Lock"
1. Take Turns: Player 1 chooses any open box on the grid.
2. Solve & Explain: Solve the equation. To lock the box, you must state your strategy aloud to your partner (e.g., "I doubled 6 twice to get 24!").
3. Claim: If your partner agrees, write your answer in pencil and color the tiny corner circle in your player color.
4. Win Condition: First player to claim 4 boxes in a straight line (across, down, or diagonal) wins!
Rule Check
If your partner catches an error, they can "Counter-Attack" by correcting it and claiming that square for themselves! Double check your answers!
