Monster Bug Lab
2nd Grade Math & Science: Measuring the Giants
Learning Objective
Students will estimate and measure length (cm) and weight (g) using standard units by comparing classroom objects to three "monster" insects: the Titan Beetle, Giant Weta, and Atlas Moth.
Materials
Balance Scales (Station A)
Pennies (75+ per station)
Rulers (Metric)

Lesson Timeline
5 MIN
Warm-up: The Weight Guess
Engage students with a physical estimation challenge.
Show a bag of 25 pennies. "If a giant bug was this heavy, would it be light or heavy?"
Pass a bag of pennies around. Have students guess what classroom object might weigh the same.
5 MIN
Viewing: Meet 3 Giant Insects!
Watch the SciShow Kids video (URL in Slides).
Titan Beetle: 16 cm (long).
Giant Weta: 70 g / 25 pennies (heavy).
Atlas Moth: 30 cm wingspan (wide).
25 MIN
Activity: Measure the Monsters
Split the class into three rotating stations (8-9 mins per station).
Station A: Weight
Use balance scales. Put 25 pennies (70g) on one side. Compare to erasers, glue sticks, and pencils. Record if they are heavier or lighter than a Giant Weta.
Station B: Length
Use the Bug Ruler Reference. Measure objects against the 16cm Titan Beetle line. Record items that are shorter, longer, or "just right."
Station C: Width
Measure hand spans using a metric ruler. Compare to the 30cm Atlas Moth line. How many hands wide is the moth?
10 MIN
Closure: Scientist Circle
Regroup for a concluding discussion.
Which insect was the most surprising? Why?
What is one thing that is exactly the same size as an Atlas Moth?
Expert Notes
Station Setup Tips:
Pre-bag pennies into groups of 25 to save time. Mark the 16cm and 30cm lines on butcher paper if the printed reference sheets are too small for group work.
Misconception Alert:
Remind students that "Titan" doesn't mean "scary." Emphasize that these bugs are mostly gentle and play important roles in their habitats (like cleaning the forest floor).
