IEP Scoring Criteria:
Strategy Criterion: Student must produce a visual representation, write a number equation, set up manipulatives, OR record calculator steps.
Calculation Criterion: The numerical sum or difference must be exact. Minor unit label omissions do not negate calculation accuracy for this goal.
Calculator Policy: Keying into a calculator is an approved goal strategy. Check that the student entered the correct operation sign (+ or -).
Tip: If the student calculated correctly using mental math but showed no strategy, prompt once: "Show or tell me how you solved it" before recording data.

Protocol Guide
Least-to-Most Prompting Hierarchy (Wait 5-7 Seconds Between Prompts)
Level
Prompt Type
Teacher Verbal / Non-Verbal Script
Counts as Mastery?
Level 1
Independent [IND]
"Read the problem and use your strategy toolbox to solve it."
YES (Mastery)
Level 2
Indirect Verbal [IVP]
"What is the first step you take when reading a word problem?" / "What tool can you pick?"
YES (Prompted)
Level 3
Direct Verbal [DVP]
"Are we putting numbers together or taking some away? Write the minus sign."
NO (Instruction)
Level 4
Gestural / Pointer [GP]
Teacher points to key vocabulary words ("in all", "left") or points to the equation box.
NO (Instruction)
Level 5
Model / Demo [MD]
Teacher demonstrates drawing the bar model or keys the numbers on the calculator.
NO (Instruction)
Scoring Rules for the 80% Benchmark
Probe Length: Each weekly probe consists of 5 items. 4 correct = 80%; 5 correct = 100%.
Criterion Requirement: The student must demonstrate at least one problem-solving strategy (drawing, equation, manipulatives, or calculator). If only an answer is written without any evidence of strategy, prompt the student to show or explain their method.
Reading Accommodation: Word problems may be read aloud to the student if designated in their IEP without invalidating math goal accuracy.
Common Errors & Quick Corrections
Wrong Operation: Student adds when they should subtract. Correction: Prompt with Part-Part-Whole: "Do we already know the total, or are we finding the total?"
Calculator Transposition: Student types 58 instead of 85. Correction: Have student read the calculator screen numbers aloud before pressing [=].
Regrouping Confusion: In pencil calculations, student flips digits (e.g. 80 - 47 → 47 - 0). Correction: Route student to calculator or base-10 blocks.
Progress Monitoring Decision Tree
Score: 0% – 40% (0-2 Correct)
Action: Reduce number magnitude (within 50). Require physical base-ten blocks before moving to drawings. Pair with high-intensity 1-on-1 guided practice.
Score: 60% (3 Correct)
Action: Review key operational vocabulary. Encourage dual-strategy use (e.g., sketch bar model first, then calculate using calculator for verification).
Score: 80% – 100% (4-5 Correct)
Action: When achieved across 3 consecutive weekly probes, convene IEP team to mark goal mastered and propose two-step word problem goals.
