Points & The 3 Basic Line Types
Look at the Ends!
Foundation Point: An exact position in space, shown as a single dot (• A)
A
Line 2 Arrows
← Keeps going both ways →
A straight path that never ends in either direction.
Memory Trick:
Arrows on both ends = keeps rolling forever!
Line Segment 2 Endpoints
• Has 2 Endpoints •
A piece of a line with a start and a stop.
Memory Trick:
"Segment" means a piece like a slice of pie!
Ray 1 Dot + 1 Arrow
Start Point → Forever
Starts at one endpoint and goes on forever in one direction.
Memory Trick:
Like a sunbeam ray starting at the sun!
Detective Rule: Count the arrows! 2 arrows = Line • 0 arrows = Line Segment • 1 arrow = Ray .

Arm Gestures for Lines
Stand Up & Try It!
↔
LINE
Stretch both arms out wide.
Point both index fingers outward!
Fingers are the arrows pointing forever!
Chant: "Arrows go forever!"
•—•
LINE SEGMENT
Stretch both arms out wide.
Make two closed fists at the ends!
Fists are the endpoints that STOP!
Chant: "Stop and Stop!"
•→
RAY
Stretch both arms out wide.
1 fist (stop) + 1 pointed finger (arrow)!
Starts at the fist, shoots out forever!
Chant: "Start and shoot!"
Teacher Callout: Call out a word—students strike the pose!
TEKS 4.6(A)&(B) Clue #2
Parallel Lines
Never Touch!
What are Parallel Lines?
Lines that run side-by-side in the exact same direction and NEVER intersect (never touch or cross)!
↔ Distance stays the same forever ↔
Symbol: We write AB || CD
Secret Memory Clue!
Look at the double L's in the word:
PAllEL
The two ll 's are parallel lines that never touch!
Real-World Examples:
Railroad train tracks
Opposite edges of a desk or door
Rungs of a ladder
Kinesthetic Check: Hold two arms straight out like train tracks!
TEKS 4.6(B) Clue #3
Intersecting Lines
Cross at 1 Point!
What are Intersecting Lines?
Lines that cross or meet each other at exactly one shared point .
Intersection Point Shared crossing point in the middle
Notice: They can cross like a big letter X at any angle!
Memory Clue!
Think of a street intersection where cars cross paths, or scissors opening and closing!
Crossroads = Intersect
Real-World Examples:
Letter X
Crossed baseball bats
A 4-way street stop sign intersection
Kinesthetic Check: Cross your arms in front of your chest to make an X!
TEKS 4.6(A) Clue #4
Perpendicular Lines
Square Corners Only!
Special Intersecting Lines!
Lines that cross each other to form a perfect square corner (a 90° right angle)!
□ Look for the Square Corner!
Symbol: We write AB ⊥ CD (upside down T)
Memory Clue!
Perpendicular lines make the capital letter T or L !
If a piece of paper corner fits inside → It's Perpendicular!
Real-World Examples:
Corner of a window frame or door
A letter T or L
Plus sign +
Kinesthetic Check: Form an "L" or "T" with your arms to make a right angle!

SPED Targeted Re-engagement (TEKS 4.6A):
If a student struggles with arrow vs. dot notation, have them place colored counters / bingo chips on the dots to represent "traffic red lights" (stopping points) and paper arrows to represent "traffic green lights" (moving forever).

Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS 4.6)
TEKS 4.6(A): Identify points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, and perpendicular and parallel lines.
TEKS 4.6(B): Identify and distinguish between parallel and intersecting lines.
Kinesthetic Translation: Represent geometric concepts using whole-body gestures and tactile index-card right-angle tests.

Multisensory Gesture Routines (Run Daily)
Line ↔
Body Cue: Extend both arms straight out; point index fingers on both hands.
Chant: "Arrows go forever!"
Line Segment •—•
Body Cue: Extend both arms straight out; squeeze tight closed fists on both ends.
Chant: "Stop and Stop!"
Ray •→
Body Cue: One closed fist (endpoint), one arm pointing straight out with index finger.
Chant: "Start and shoot!"
Parallel ||
Body Cue: Hold both arms straight parallel in front of chest like railroad tracks.
Chant: "Never ever touch!"
Perpendicular ⊥
Body Cue: Form an uppercase "L" or "T" by placing vertical forearm against horizontal forearm.
Chant: "Square corner!"
Intersecting ×
Body Cue: Cross forearms at wrists to make a giant "X" in front of chest.
Chant: "Cross at one point!"
2
Instructional Sequence (45–55 Minutes)
10 Min
Activation & Gesture Drill: Introduce the "Line Detective" premise. Teach the point dot and three line gestures (Line, Segment, Ray) with standing drills.
15 Min
Visual Slide Deck Instruction (TEKS 4.6): Present the Line Detectives Slides . Focus explicitly on Slides 2–6. Emphasize counting endpoints vs arrows and spotting the "double L" in parallel.
15 Min
Guided Worksheet & Tactile Testing: Distribute the Line Detectives Practice Worksheet . Provide each student with an index card corner to test the "square corner" in Section C.
10 Min
Detective Classroom Hunt & Exit Check: Students find parallel and perpendicular lines around the room, share with a partner, and turn in their completed sheets.

Question 1 • TEKS 4.6(A) • Identifying a Ray Correct: B
✓ Why B is correct: Figure B has exactly 1 endpoint (dot) on the left and 1 arrowhead on the right, which defines a geometric ray .
✗ Distractor Analysis:
A: Shows a line segment (2 endpoints, does not continue).
C: Shows a line (2 arrowheads, continues forever in both directions).
D: Shows a single point (an exact dot location).
Question 2 • TEKS 4.6(B) • Identifying Parallel Lines Correct: G
✓ Why G is correct: Figure G displays two horizontal lines that maintain equal distance from each other and will never intersect, representing parallel lines .
✗ Distractor Analysis:
F: Shows intersecting lines crossing like an "X".
H: Shows perpendicular lines forming square corners (90°).
J: Shows lines that are converging and will intersect if extended.
Question 3 • TEKS 4.6(A) • Definitional Reasoning Correct: B
✓ Why B is correct: By definition, a line segment is a measurable portion of a line bounded by two distinct endpoints.
✗ Distractor Analysis:
A (Line): Extends indefinitely in both directions with no endpoints.
C (Ray): Has only 1 endpoint and extends in 1 direction forever.
D (Point): Has no length or dimension; it is an exact location.
