Teacher Facilitation & Progress Monitoring • Grade 2 Tier 2
Standard 2.MD.5
Lesson Overview
Objective
Students will solve addition and subtraction word problems involving lengths (same units) within 100 using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown.
Target Skills
Visualizing length on a ruler
Translating scenarios to equations
Solving for the unknown symbol (\( ? \))
Small Group Facilitation Script
1. The Hook (2 mins)
"Today we are Blueprint Designers! Sometimes our blueprints aren't finished, and we have to figure out how much more wood or metal we need. How do we find a missing piece of length?"
2. Guided Modeling (8 mins)
Problem: A blue board is 15 cm long. A red board is 10 cm long. How long are they together?
Draw: "Let's draw a line that goes to 15, then another that goes 10 more."
Equation: "Our total is unknown. Let's write \( 15 + 10 = ? \)"
Solve: "We can count on our ruler or use addition strategies."
3. Scaffolding Strategies (Continuous)
If students struggle with subtraction, relate it to "cutting off" a piece of the ruler drawing.
If students struggle with the symbol, use a literal box \( \Box \) or question mark \( ? \).

Key: Y = Yes N = No P = Partial / With Prompting
Watch Out For!
•
Miscounting Units: Students might count the tick marks instead of the spaces (the actual length units) on the ruler drawings.
•
Operation Choice: Students might see "longer" and automatically add, even if the problem asks for the difference.
