Identifying Zones & Determining Responses
GAIN MTSS Framework
Task: For each scenario below, work with your team to Identify the Zone the student is in and Discuss the Staff Response. Focus on what "neuro-attuned" support looks like for that specific state.
1. Hypoaroused
Scenario A: Marcus arrives 15 minutes late. He has his hood up, slumps into his seat, and keeps his eyes half-closed during the morning meeting.
Scenario B: During quiet reading, Sarah has her head flat on the desk. When nudged, she mumbles "I'm tired" and doesn't reach for her book.
Scenario C: Leo moves in slow motion to get his supplies. He responds with short, irritable "I don't knows" to simple, friendly questions.
2. Positive Stress
Scenario A: Maya is working diligently on a math packet. She checks the timer occasionally but remains focused and follows the multi-step directions.
Scenario B: David is raising his hand frequently to answer review questions. He waits his turn patiently and appears energized by the fast-paced game.
Scenario C: Elena is collaborating with a peer on a science project. They are negotiating roles calmly and she is able to accept her partner's suggestions.
3. Tolerable Stress
Scenario A: Jackson sighs heavily while looking at a writing prompt. He starts tapping his pencil rapidly and mutters, "This is too much work."
Scenario B: Chloe begins resisting a transition to the next task. She asks, "Why do we have to do this now?" and begins fidgeting with her sweater.
Scenario C: Sam makes a small mistake on his drawing and immediately crumbles the paper, looking around the room with wide, slightly anxious eyes.
4. Intensive Stress
Scenario A: Jordan yells a profanity at a peer who accidentally bumped his desk. He ignores the teacher's request to take a breath and stands up defiantly.
Scenario B: Mia makes a loud, inappropriate comment and tells the teacher, "I'm leaving and you can't stop me," while moving abruptly toward the door.
Scenario C: Tyler impulsively sweeps his books off the desk onto the floor and begins pacing in the back of the room, breathing loudly and glaring.
Discussion Focus (Zones 1-4)
Compare Tolerable vs. Intensive stress. At what point does the "Thinking Brain" begin to go offline, and how does that change the type of language we use with the student?
In the Hypoaroused scenarios, what is the danger of pushing for academic performance immediately without a "refueling" transition first?

5. Overwhelming
A (Flight): Anthony suddenly bolts from the classroom, running down the hallway toward the exit without looking back or responding to his name.
B (Fight): Lily begins throwing heavy objects and charges toward a staff member who is standing near the door, shouting unintelligible words.
C (Freeze): Chris stops all movement. He has a glazed look in his eyes and is completely unresponsive to physical or verbal prompts, appearing "locked in."
6. Recovery Phase 1
Scenario A: Ten minutes after a crisis, Jasmine is sitting in a quiet corner. She is breathing heavily and looks pale. She glares if anyone steps within 5 feet.
Scenario B: After eloping, Kevin is found sitting by a fence. He is silent and looks spent, but pulls his arms in tight if a staff member tries to speak to him.
Scenario C: Back in the room, Mateo is staring at a single spot on the floor. He doesn't move when the class starts a new activity and seems to be in a heavy daze.
7. Recovery Phase 2
Scenario A: Andre begins to make random, disconnected comments about a movie he saw while a staff member sits nearby. He is not yet ready to work.
Scenario B: Sophia starts to engage in a low-demand task like coloring, but when asked why she was upset earlier, she just shrugs and looks confused.
Scenario C: Liam asks for a drink of water and makes a brief joke about the weather. His energy is low, but he is starting to make eye contact again.
8. Exhaustion
Scenario A: Bella is back in class but signals she needs more time by putting her head down when the teacher approaches with a worksheet.
Scenario B: Noah can answer "yes/no" questions about his needs but refuses to participate in a reflective conversation or apology yet.
Scenario C: Zoe is following routines again but moves slowly, avoids eye contact with peers, and appears emotionally "emptied."
Discussion Focus (Zones 5-8)
In the Recovery Phase 1, why is it critical that staff remain "calm and quiet" rather than trying to process the behavior immediately?
Examine the Exhaustion phase. How can forcing a student to apologize too early in this zone lead to a secondary "cycle" of intensive stress?

This key provides the Ideal Neuro-Attuned Response for each scenario in the Discussion Guide. Use these points to guide staff toward responses that match the student's neurological capacity in each zone.
Zone & Scenarios The Neuro-Attuned Response 1. Hypoaroused Marcus, Sarah, Leo Refuel First: Provide high-support, low-demand activities. Offer a snack, water, or 5 minutes of a preferred activity. Avoid "pushing through" as it often leads to a quick jump into Tolerable or Intensive stress due to low energy reserves. 2. Positive Stress Maya, David, Elena Maintain & Challenge: Provide standard classroom support. This is the optimal "Ready to Learn" state. Use positive reinforcement to acknowledge their engagement and persistence. 3. Tolerable Stress Jackson, Chloe, Sam Scaffold & Acknowledge: Acknowledge the stressor ("I see this math is feeling big right now"). Provide a "thinking scaffold" (e.g., do the first two problems together). Offer a brief "brain break" or a "reset" option before the load becomes too high. 4. Intensive Stress Jordan, Mia, Tyler Safety & De-escalation: Thinking brain is going offline. Stop asking "Why?" or giving logic-based directions. Use a calm, low voice. Direct toward a refueling station or a designated "cool down" space immediately. Minimize verbal input.

Zone & Scenarios The Neuro-Attuned Response 5. Overwhelming Anthony, Lily, Chris Survival Support: The brain is in pure survival mode (Fight/Flight/Freeze). Ensure safety for the student and others. Do not process. Use proximity without being intrusive. Wait for the autonomic nervous system to down-regulate. 6. Recovery Phase 1 Jasmine, Kevin, Mateo Quiet Proximity: The student is emotionally spent. Avoid eye contact if it causes stress. Provide a blanket, water, or a quiet space. Crucial: Do not attempt to apologize or reflect here. The brain cannot access language or social rules yet. 7. Recovery Phase 2 Andre, Sophia, Liam Low-Demand Connection: The brain is starting to "re-online." Use "parallel play" or low-demand tasks (coloring, sorting). Engage in "non-contingent" conversation (topics the student likes). If they start talking about the incident, listen but don't interrogate.

"As the quote from Darling-Hammond states, brain science doesn't always tell us exactly what to do, but it tells us what is likely to work. If our practices aren't consistent with how a brain develops and responds to stress, we are fighting an uphill battle against biology."

"We often think of stress as a bad thing, but Stuart Shanker defines it simply as 'anything that takes fuel from the body.' Thinking, walking, feeling, and even keeping the body temperature stable takes fuel. Stressload is the total amount of energy required to keep a student in balance at any given moment. When the stressload exceeds the fuel, the behavior cycle begins."

"Why do some students 'blow up' while others stay calm during the same math test? Because their stressload is different. Age, genetics, whether they ate breakfast, and even how attuned we are to them changes their energy reserve. Our goal is to reduce the load through Tier I environmental supports."

"Think of the body like a car. The SNS is the gas pedal —it's activation. We need it to learn! But the PSNS is the brakes —it's what settles us back into homeostasis. In a regulated student, these work together. In a dysregulated student, the gas pedal is stuck down, and the brakes aren't responding."

"This is the Learning & Behavior Cycle triangle . It has three main phases: Activity (going up), Overwhelmed (the peak), and Recovery/Exhaustion (coming down). Notice the colors. Behavior is predictable. It follows a path. Our job is to notice the 'Activity' phase early to prevent reaching the 'Overwhelmed' peak."
