Integer War Teacher Guide
Integer War
Teacher Battle Plan
6TH GRADE MATH
Lesson: Multiplication of Integers
Learning Objective
Students will apply integer multiplication rules (Same Signs = Positive; Different Signs = Negative) to fact fluency challenges in a high-speed game environment.
Pacing
- Warm-up 5 min
- Video/Direct 10 min
- Integer War 30 min
- Closure 5 min
Instructional Sequence
1
Warm-up: Rapid Fire (5 min)
Conduct a choral response or white-board flash for positive-only multiplication facts (0-12). Goal: High energy, 100% accuracy before adding negatives.
2
Direct Instruction & Video (10 min)
Use the "Multiplication of Integers" video (URL provided in slides).
- [3:50] The Flip: Pause here. Ask: "The narrator says a negative multiplier means we need the 'opposite.' What will happen to these red counters?"
- [5:40] Pattern Spotting: After seeing -4 x -1, ask students to predict the "Same Sign" rule before the video states it.
- [10:39] Summary: Display the final summary screen for 2 minutes for note-taking.
3
Integer War (30 min)
Students play in pairs using standard decks or the "Clash Cards."
Key Misconception: Students often try to "add" integers during War. Remind them: "Red is Negative, Black is Positive. We are MULTIPLYING."
4
Closure & Exit (5 min)
Review the "Hardest Combinations" (usually Negative x Negative). Ask: "Why is a negative times a negative positive?" (Answer: The 'opposite' of a negative is positive).
Tournament Extension
Once students are confident, create a class bracket. Winners of 3-minute "speed rounds" advance. Finalists face off on the smartboard for the title of "Integer Master."
Differentiation & Support
For Struggling Learners
- The Rule Card: Provide the small reference cards (from the Instructions handout) on their desks.
- Color Coding: Have them use a green highlighter for positive cards and red for negative during the first few rounds.
For Advanced Learners
- Triple War: Flip 3 cards at once. Multiply the first two, then multiply the product by the third.
- The Inverse Challenge: If a student wins a pair, they must name a division fact using those same numbers before they can take the cards.
Common Misconceptions
Error 1: Negative + Negative = Positive?
Students often confuse addition rules with multiplication rules. Remedy: Always reference the "opposite" flip from the video. "If you have negative counters and multiply by a negative, they MUST flip to positive."
Error 2: Forgetting Zero
Students may get stuck on cards like J, Q, K if assigned 0. Remedy: Define face cards clearly (Ace=1, J=11, Q=12, K=13) or explicitly include Joker=0 for a challenge.
Quick Check Questions
Use these during the walk-around:
- "I see a red and a black card. Should the answer be positive or negative?"
- "Your product was positive. What does that tell you about the signs of the two cards?"

Your Mission: Integer War
How to Play:
- Split the deck evenly with your partner.
- Flip the top card of your pile at the same time.
- The Color Code:
BLACK = POSITIVE
RED = NEGATIVE
- The first person to shout the correct product wins both cards.
- The player with the most cards at the end of 20 minutes wins the war!
