Grid Shrinkers
Why does multiplying decimals make things smaller? Let's unlock the visual power of the 10x10 grid.

The Shrinking Mystery
Whole Number Rule
Multiplying whole numbers makes a product larger than the factors.
2 × 3 = 6
"6 is bigger than 2 and 3!"
The Decimal Twist
Multiplying decimals less than one makes a product smaller than both factors!
0.2 × 0.3 = 0.06
"0.06 is tiny! Why does this happen?"
Taking a "part of a part" shrinks the value.
02/06
Decoding the 10x10 Grid
1
The Whole Grid = 1.0 (One Whole)
The entire grid of 100 squares is equal to exactly 1 unit.
10
One Column/Row = 0.1 (One Tenth)
The grid is split into 10 columns/rows. Each is 110 or 0.1.
100
One Single Square = 0.01 (One Hundredth)
There are 100 small squares. Each is 1100 or 0.01.
Knowing the grid units is key to visual modeling.

Modeling 0.3 × 0.4: Shading the Factors
1
Step 1: Color 0.3 Yellow (Columns)
We want to model 0.3 (three-tenths). We shade in 3 vertical columns.
2
Step 2: Color 0.4 Blue (Rows)
Now we want to find 0.4 (four-tenths) OF that. We shade in 4 horizontal rows.
Notice the magical overlap starting to form!
04/06
The Overlap: Finding the Product
12 Overlapping Squares
Why did it get smaller?
We are finding 0.4 (4 tenths) of the 0.3 (3 tenths) we shaded first!
Connecting to fractions:
310 × 410 = 12100 = 0.12
!
The Shrinking Truth
Because both factors are parts of a whole, their overlap can only ever be a smaller part of the whole! 0.12 is smaller than both 0.3 and 0.4.
A part of a part is always a smaller piece.
05/06
Let's Shrink Together!
Solve This on Your Notes:
0.5 × 0.7 = ?
How many tenths are in each factor?
Y
Shade 5 vertical columns yellow
B
Shade 7 horizontal rows blue
G
Count the overlapping green squares!
Ready for live student work!
Confirm: Is your product smaller than both factors?

1. The Mystery of the Shrinking Numbers
When we multiply whole numbers, the product is always ________________________ than the factors. But when we multiply decimals less than 1, something strange happens! Fill in the blanks below to capture this "Decimal Twist."
Whole Numbers:
2 × 3 = 6
The product (6) is larger than 2 and 3.
Decimals (Less than 1):
0.2 × 0.3 = ________________
The product is ________________ than both factors!
2. Decoding the 10x10 Grid
To understand why this happens, we use a 10x10 grid model. Label what each part of the grid represents below:
The Entire Grid = ________ unit (One Whole)
One Column / Row = ________ of a whole (represented as 0.1 or 110)
One Small Square = ________ of a whole (represented as 0.01 or 1100)
3. Walk-Through: Modeling 0.3 × 0.4
Follow the slide steps to shade the model. Record your steps and observation below:
Step 1: Color the Columns
Shade 0.3 of the grid yellow (vertical).
Step 2: Color the Rows
Shade 0.4 of the grid blue (horizontal).
310 × 410 = ____100 = 0.____
0.3 × 0.4 Model
4. Try it Together: 0.5 × 0.7
What is the product of 0.5 × 0.7?
Product = __________________
Explain why the product is smaller:

The Golden Question: "Why does the product shrink?"
When we multiply two numbers less than 1, we are finding a part of a part! Taking a fraction of something that is already less than a whole makes it even smaller!
0.6 × 0.4 = 0.24
Factor 1: Vertical
0.6 (6 Tenths)
Shaded as 6 whole vertical columns (yellow). It represents 6/10 of the whole grid.
Factor 2: Horizontal
0.4 (4 Tenths)
Shaded as 4 horizontal rows (blue). We only care about the rows overlapping the yellow columns.
The Product: The Overlap
0.24 (24 Hundredths)
The 24 grid boxes where BOTH colors overlap (green). It is only 24/100 of the whole grid!

Take a Part
Multiplication means taking a fraction "of" another fraction.
Product Shrinks
The overlap area is always smaller than either original factor.
Prove It
0.24 < 0.6
0.24 < 0.4
Interactive Task:
Look at the shaded area. Share with a partner how many columns are shaded, how many rows are shaded, and point to where the green "Shrink Zone" is located!

Task 2: Real-World Visual Scenarios
MATH-G5-WS1
Scenario E: The Pixel Art Canvas
Leo is designing a pixel-art character on a game editor. His background takes up exactly 0.8 of the canvas. His main character overlaps exactly 0.5 of that background. Shade the model below to find what decimal of the total canvas is covered by the character.
Equation: ________ × ________ = ________
Explain why the area covered by the character is smaller than the total area covered by the background alone:
Scenario F: The Veggie Garden Plot
A school gardener is planting seeds on a plot of land. She reserves exactly 0.6 of the land for vegetables. Of that vegetable section, exactly 0.3 is planted with sweet organic carrots. Model this scenario to find what portion of the total land is organic carrots.
Equation: ________ × ________ = ________
Explain how you knew which columns and rows to shade to represent sweet carrots:
Brain Stretch (Extension)
If you multiply 0.9 × 0.9, the product is 0.81. Even though both factors are nearly equal to 1 whole, why is the product still smaller than both factors? Explain below.

Task 2 Solutions: Real-World Scenarios
MATH-G5-WS1-KEY
Scenario E Solution: The Pixel Art Canvas
Equation: 0.8 × 0.5 = 0.40
Sample Explanation Answer:
"We are finding 0.5 (half) of the background (0.8). Since we are taking a portion of a portion, the resulting green overlap (0.40) is smaller than the original background (0.8)."
Scenario F Solution: The Veggie Garden Plot
Equation: 0.6 × 0.3 = 0.18
Sample Explanation Answer:
"To represent 0.6 (vegetables), I shaded 6 columns yellow. To represent 0.3 (carrots), I shaded 3 horizontal rows blue. The 18 green overlapping blocks represent organic carrots (0.18)."
Brain Stretch Solution Key
"Even though 0.9 is nearly a whole, multiplying 0.9 × 0.9 is finding 9 tenths of 9 tenths. This means we are throwing away 1 tenth of our original portion. Any time we take a fraction of another fraction, the product MUST shrink!"
