Misconception: Column Flipping
In subtraction (e.g., Card 8: Tens column: \( 2 - 8 \)), a student might simply calculate \( 8 - 2 = 6 \) because it is easier, ignoring borrowing requirements.
➔ Fix: Ask, "If you have 2 candies, can I take 8?" Point to the Expanded Form Helper. Show that we must borrow 10 from the neighbor to turn that 2 into 12.
Misconception: Phantom Carries
In addition (e.g., Card 1: \( 50 + 80 = 130 \)), the student might write the 30 but forget to carry the 100 into the hundreds column, resulting in 4,636 instead of 4,736.
➔ Fix: Have them double check that their dotted carry box contains a "+" number. Point out how 130 literally "spills over" 30 and 100.
Misconception: Zero Ghosting (The Ultimate Challenge - Card 10)
When borrowing across zeros (e.g., 5,004 - 2,348), students get stuck borrowing from the tens place (0) and hundreds place (0). They might blindly write '9's or skip straight to the 5 thousands.
➔ Master Strategy: "Go next door! If Tens has no cookies, Tens has to ask Hundreds. If Hundreds has no cookies, Hundreds asks Thousands! Thousands gives 1,000, so Hundreds gets 10 hundreds. Now Hundreds can give 1 hundred (leaving 9) to Tens. Finally, Tens has 10 tens, and can give 1 ten (leaving 9) to Ones!"
