Duration: 45–50 Mins
Ten-Frame Frog Pond: Adding Within 5 CCSS K.OA.A.1 • K.OA.A.2
Students act out pond story problems using physical frog counters on a lily pad ten-frame to model joining sets and compose addition equations up to 5.
Core Objectives
Represent addition as putting together two groups of frogs up to 5 on a ten-frame and write matching equations (\(a + b = c\)).
Essential Vocabulary
Add (put together), Plus sign (+), Equal (=), Sum / In All, Ten-Frame, Join.
Materials & Prep
Frog counters (2 colors/species), Lily Pad Ten-Frame mats, dry-erase markers, Frog Story Cards, Exit Tickets.
1 Hook & Warm-Up: The Singing Frog Choir (8 Mins)
Engage & Recall
Rhyme Prompt: Gather students in a circle around the classroom rug "pond." Chant together with hand gestures:
"Two little speckled frogs sitting on a speckled log, eating some most delicious bugs... Splash! 1 jumps in the pool where it is nice and cool!"
Concept Bridge: "At first there were 2 frogs swimming on lily pads. Then 1 more leaped in! Did our frog family get bigger or smaller? When we put friends together, we ADD!"
2 Direct Instruction: Modeling on the Lily Pad Frame (14 Mins)
C-P-A Progression
Step 1: Concrete
First Group Landing
Place 2 green frogs on the top row starting left-to-right. "Count with me: 1, 2. Two frogs sunning."
Step 2: Joining Set
Second Group Splash
Bring 1 brown frog: "Splash! 1 frog joins them in the next open pad! We combined them together."
Step 3: Abstract Symbol
The Math Equation
Write 2 + 1 = 3. Teach: "+" means join, "=" means the total together.
Teacher Talk / Choral Response
"Say it with our frog gestures: '2 frogs PLUS 1 frog EQUALS 3 frogs in all!' (Clap hands together on equals). Let's count the lily pads from left to right to verify: 1, 2, 3!"

🐸 Instructional Guide: Guided Practice, Game & Differentiation
Unit: Addition to 5
3 Guided Practice: Math Story Theater (10 Mins)
We Do (Whole & Partner)
Distribute lily pad ten-frames and counters to student pairs. Read Story Prompt aloud:
Story Problem A:
"3 frogs sit on the top row pads. 2 more leap in from the log. How many frogs are in the pond altogether?"
Partners place counters & write: 3 + 2 = 5
Story Problem B:
"1 lone frog croaks on a pad. 3 noisy friends hop over to join! How many frogs are singing now?"
Partners place counters & write: 1 + 3 = 4
4 Partner Center: Frog Pond Leap & Add Game (12 Mins)
Hands-on Practice
Role 1: Storyteller
Draws a Frog Story Card or rolls two dice (restricted 0–4) and reads the pond action to their partner.
Role 2: Pond Hopper
Places matching frog counters onto the lily pad ten-frame starting from pad 1, left to right.
Together: Equation
Both record the equation on their wipe-off board: \(\square + \square = \square\) and whisper-ribbit the total!
Common Misconceptions & In-the-Moment Coaching
Misconception: Double Counting or Skipping
Student recounts the first group or places frogs randomly across scattered squares instead of organized left-to-right filling.
✓ Fix: Teach the "touch-and-hop" rule: always start at the star on pad 1 and fill top row first.
Misconception: Confusing + and =
Student writes the sum where the second addend belongs (e.g., writing \(2 + 3\) as \(2 = 5\)).
✓ Fix: Color-code the operational symbols: green plus means "add friends", red equal means "all together".
Targeted Tiered Differentiation
Support (Tier 1)
Use 2 contrasting colored frogs (yellow & green). Restrict addends to \(+ 1\) or sums up to 3 before advancing to 5.
On-Level (Tier 2)
Work with combinations up to 5 (\(0+5, 1+4, 2+3\)). Transition from verbal storytelling to reading card prompts.
Challenge / Extension
Missing addend pond mysteries: "There are 4 frogs total. 2 are underwater! How many are on the pads?" (\(2 + \square = 4\)).
Closure & Check for Understanding (6 Mins)
Gather students at the pond rug. Call for a unison frog croak when holding up correct sums. Administer the 1-page Exit Ticket.
