Cube Tower Showdown: Comparing Quantities to 5
Comparing sets up to 5 through concrete 1-to-1 matching and comparative math language
Standard: CCSS K.CC.C.6
Duration: 45 Minutes
Focus Concept
Quantity Comparison
Manipulatives
Unifix Cubes & Dice
Group Structure
Pairs / Partner Play
Outcome
More, Fewer, Same
Learning Objectives (SWBAT)
- Build towers of 1 to 5 snap cubes accurately based on a dot die roll.
- Align two cube towers flat on a baseline to compare heights via one-to-one matching.
- Verbalize comparisons using the exact phrases more than, fewer than, or the same as.
Materials & Teacher Prep
- Unifix Cubes: 2 contrasting colors per pair (e.g., 10 red, 10 blue).
- Dice: 1 dot die (1–6) per pair (cover 6 with a star sticker as "re-roll").
- Printables: 1 Activity Mat per student pair; 1 Exit Ticket per child.
- Anchor Chart: "More Than / Fewer Than / The Same As" visual poster.
Target Academic Vocabulary & Math Sentence Frames
More Than
"[My tower] has more cubes than [Partner's tower] because it is taller."
Fewer Than
"[My tower] has fewer cubes than [Partner's tower] because it is shorter."
The Same As
"Both towers have the same number of cubes. They match!"
1
Warm-Up & Concrete Hook: "Tall or Small?" (8 Minutes)
Whole Group Rug
Hold up 3 blue cubes snapped together and 5 yellow cubes snapped together. Place them flat on the rug side-by-side.
Teacher Prompt: "Look at these two towers standing on the rug baseline. Which tower reached higher into the air? How can our counting prove it?"
1-to-1 Match Gesture: Connect invisible bridge lines with a finger from cube 1 to cube 1, cube 2 to cube 2, cube 3 to cube 3. Point to the extra yellow cubes: "Yellow has leftovers! That means 5 is more than 3!"
2
Direct Modeling: The "Tower Showdown" Protocol (12 Minutes)
Teacher Demo Pair
Step 1: Roll & Subitize Each partner rolls a dot die and says their number out loud without counting if possible.
Step 2: Snap & Stack Collect exact matching cubes from personal tray and snap them into a sturdy single tower.
Step 3: Stand on Baseline Place both towers side-by-side inside the mat arena directly on the flat start line.
Step 4: Say the Math Talk Students point to their tower and recite the corresponding sentence frame to partner.

Partner Guided Practice: The Showdown Arena (18 Minutes)
Student Pairs
Partners take turns rolling their die, building their towers (1–5), standing them together on the Activity Mat baseline, and coloring/recording their result for each round.
Teacher Circulation Stems (Formative Checkpoints)
Probe 1: "Show me how you know this tower has more without counting first. Where is the flat bottom line?"
Probe 2: "Who has fewer cubes? Can you use your pointer finger to show me which cubes match up pair-by-pair?"
4
Debrief & Exit Ticket Transition (7 Minutes)
Individual Assessment
Call students back to the rug with quiet signal. Highlight two volunteer students who rolled matching numbers (e.g., 4 and 4) to review the term "the same as" / "equal." Then transition students to desks for independent completion of the Tower Showdown Exit Ticket.
Differentiation Strategies
Support / Intervention: Use a 1–3 dot die or pre-counted dot cards. Have the student physically touch each cube pair with connecting plastic links or drawing yarn lines across towers to solidify 1-to-1 matching.
Extension / Challenge: Ask students to quantify the difference: "How many more cubes does Player A have than Player B?" Introduce building two colors in one tower to show "part-part-whole."
Common Misconceptions & Fixes
Uneven Baseline: Students hold towers in the air or start at different table heights.
Fix: Emphasize the thick black "Showdown Baseline" on the mat. "Feet must touch the floor!"
Loose / Unpressed Cubes: Gaps make shorter towers appear taller.
Fix: "Snap and squeeze tight before you stand them up!"
Mastery Success Criteria
Accurately counts and builds a tower from 1 to 5 cubes without adding extra.
Aligns towers side-by-side to visually inspect height difference.
Uses correct math vocabulary (more than, fewer than, the same as).
