Target Grade
Grade 6
Learning Objective
Students will master the two-step algorithm to convert any fraction into a percentage: first by using long division to find a decimal equivalent, and then multiplying that decimal by 100%.
Pacing (50 Minutes)
- 5 min Warm-up: "Mental Math Pizza" - establishing benchmarks (50% = 1/2).
- 10 min Video Study: Viewing with strategic pauses for note-taking and discussion.
- 25 min Main Activity: Partner Relay Activity (alternating steps).
- 5 min Assessment: Individual Exit Ticket (Problem: 1/2).
- 5 min Reflection: Discussing the "Multiples List" strategy for difficult divisors.
Vocabulary
Numerator: Top number (Dividend)
Denominator: Bottom number (Divisor)
Dividend: Number inside the house
Divisor: Number outside the house
Quotient: The answer to division
Decimal: Base-10 representation
Percentage: Part of 100
Instructional Guidance
Warm-up Discussion
"If you share half a pizza, what percentage did you give away?"
Guide students to see that 1/2 is 50%. This creates a "benchmark" anchor. Ask about 100% (the whole thing, or 1/1). Explain that today we will learn how to find percentages for fractions that aren't as easy as 1/2.
0:15
Strategy Capture: Have students write down the two steps on their worksheet. Emphasize that we always go through decimals first.
1:50
Study Skills: Discuss the "Multiples List." Ask: "How many of you get stuck in the middle of long division because you aren't sure how many times a number goes in?" Explain that this list removes the guesswork.
3:17
Decimal Logic: Ask: "Why does multiplying by 100 move the decimal exactly two units?" (Related to the two zeros in 100).
Conversion Relay Setup
Students work in pairs to ensure peer-support. This "Relay" style keeps both students engaged throughout every problem.
Scaffolding
For struggling students, provide a pre-written multiples list for denominators 4, 5, and 8. Remind them to add ".00" inside the division house immediately.
Extension
Ask fast-finishers to convert 1/3 and discuss what happens when the remainder never becomes zero (repeating decimals).
Answer Key & Rubric
Worksheet Answers
1. 1/5
Step 1: 5 goes into 1.0 twice (0.2)
Step 2: 0.2 × 100 = 20%
2. 3/4
Step 1: 4 goes into 3.00 (0.75)
Step 2: 0.75 × 100 = 75%
3. 5/8 (Expert Challenge)
Step 1: 8 goes into 5.000 (0.625)
Step 2: 0.625 × 100 = 62.5%
Exit Ticket Evaluation
Fraction: 1/2
- Correct division setup (1 inside, 2 outside)
- Decimal result of 0.5
- Decimal moved 2 places right (50)
- Final answer includes % symbol (50%)
Critical Teaching Moment
The "Remainder Zero" Rule: Some students will stop dividing as soon as they get any decimal. Emphasize that in these problems, we divide until the remainder is zero (terminating decimals) or until we see a repeating pattern. For this lesson, all denominators (4, 5, 8) will terminate within 3 decimal places.
