Today's Mission
DIVISION SKILLS: Divide whole numbers by fractions using the Keep, Change, Flip method.
CONVERSION STRATEGY: Convert improper fractions to mixed numbers using Long Division and Decomposition.
Warm-Up Challenge
Quick! Write down the first 5 multiples for each number:
3
__, __, __, __, __
4
__, __, __, __, __
5
__, __, __, __, __
Tip: These multiples will help us "decompose" fractions later!

"How do we write a whole number as a fraction?"
KEEP • CHANGE • FLIP
Step 1
KEEP
The first fraction stays exactly the same.
Step 2
CHANGE
Turn the division sign into multiplication.
Step 3
FLIP
Flip the second fraction upside down (Reciprocal!).
CHALLENGE TIME

Convert this into a Mixed Number!
Use your whiteboards. Show your work.
Two Ways to Convert
1
Long Division
Divide the numerator by the denominator.
- The Quotient is the whole number.
- The Remainder is the new numerator.
2
Decomposition
Find the highest multiple of the denominator.
- Break the numerator into (Multiple + Leftover).
- Divide the multiple to get your whole number.
MISSION DEBRIEF
Which conversion method did you prefer? Why?
When might Decomposition be faster than Long Division?
Why do we put whole numbers over 1 before we start?

The Reciprocal
\( \frac{8}{1} \times \frac{4}{3} = \frac{32}{3} \) (Improper!)
METHOD A: LONG DIVISION
10
3 32
- 30
R: 2
1. Quotient (10) = Whole Number
2. Remainder (2) = New Numerator
3. Denominator (3) = Stays the same
10 \(\frac{2}{3}\)
METHOD B: DECOMPOSITION
"Find the highest multiple of the denominator just under the numerator."

3
30 + 2
3
\( \frac{30}{3} = 10 \)
\( \frac{2}{3} \)
10 \(\frac{2}{3}\)
