Multiplying by \(10, 100, 1000\): Digits shift to the LEFT (decimal moves right).
\(4.58 \times 10 = 45.8\)
Dividing by \(10, 100, 1000\): Digits shift to the RIGHT (decimal moves left).
\(4.58 \div 10 = 0.458\)
2. Rounding Decimals in 3 Steps
STEP 1
Find the Target Place
Underline the digit you are rounding to.
\(3.\underline{7}42 \rightarrow\) tenths
STEP 2
Look to the Right Neighbor
Draw an arrow to the immediate right digit.
\(3.\underline{7}\mathbf{4}2 \rightarrow\) look at \(4\)
STEP 3
Decide: Stay or Grow?
\(0\text{-}4\) stays same; \(5\text{-}9\) rounds up by \(1\).
\(4 < 5 \Rightarrow \mathbf{3.7}\)
3. Adding & Subtracting Decimals: "Line Up & Drop Down"
GOLDEN RULE: Align by Decimal Point
+ Addition: \(14.85 + 3.6\)
1
14.85
+ 03.60
18.45
Line up decimal points
Annex a 0 to fill blank slots
Add right to left, carry over
Drop the decimal straight down
- Subtraction: \(20.00 - 8.47\)
\(1\ 9\ 9\ ^{10}\)
20.00
- 08.47
11.53
Must annex zeros for whole numbers
Regroup across zeros carefully
Subtract column by column
Keep decimal in identical column
Common Pitfall: Never line up numbers to the right when adding/subtracting decimals. Line up the DECIMAL POINT !

4. Multiplying Decimals: "Count & Jump"
DO NOT LINE UP DECIMALS
STEP 1: Ignore Decimals
Multiply as if they are whole numbers.
\(3.42 \rightarrow 342\)
\(\times\ 0.5 \rightarrow \times\ 5\)
STEP 2: Count Decimal Digits
Total digits behind the decimal points in both factors.
\(3.\mathbf{42} \rightarrow \text{2 places}\)
\(0.\mathbf{5} \rightarrow \text{1 place}\)
Total = 3 places
STEP 3: Jump Decimal Left
Start at the end of product, jump left total places.
\(342 \times 5 = 1710\)
Jump 3 left:
1.710 = 1.71
5. Dividing Decimals: "Slide & Raise to the Roof"
DIVISOR MUST BE WHOLE
Case A: Whole Number Divisor
Simply raise decimal straight up to the quotient, then divide.
2.4
\(4 \overline{)\ 9.6}\)
- \(\underline{8}\)
\(16\)
- \(\underline{16}\)
\(0\)
1. Raise point up ↑
2. Divide as usual
3. No remainder allowed! (Annex zeros if needed)
Case B: Decimal Divisor (\(12.6 \div 0.3\))
Shift divisor decimal right until whole. Shift dividend identically!
42
\(3 \overline{)\ 126}\)
- \(\underline{12}\)
\(6\)
- \(\underline{6}\)
\(0\)
1. \(0.3 \times 10 = \mathbf{3}\)
2. \(12.6 \times 10 = \mathbf{126}\)
3. Equivalent: \(126 \div 3 = 42\)
Decimal Operations Quick Decision Matrix
Addition Line up points Drop straight down
Subtraction Line up points Annex zeros, regroup
Multiplication Ignore points Count total decimals
Division Shift divisor Raise to quotient roof
Sanity Check: Always estimate your answer before calculating to check if your decimal place is reasonable!
