Decimal Duel Teacher Guide
Decimal Duel
Tenths vs. Hundredths Comparison
Grade 4 Math
Standard: 4.NF.C.7
Learning Objective
Students will compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size and using a place value chart. They will justify their comparisons using visual models and mathematical language.
The "Length Trap" Misconception
"0.19 is bigger than 0.2 because 19 is bigger than 2."
This lesson explicitly targets this error by focusing on place value position rather than the number of digits.
Materials
- "Decimal Duel" Slides
- "Decimal War" Card Deck
- Anchor Chart (Display)
- Whiteboards/Markers
Lesson Procedure
5 min
Warm Up
The Decimal Vote
Write 0.19 and 0.2 on the board.
Ask: "Which is bigger?" Have students vote by moving to different sides of the room or raising hands. Don't reveal the answer yet!

Visualizing Smallness
Play the "Decimal Place Value Song". Use these specific pause points:
[0:16]: "If the whole bar is 1, what fraction is one yellow strip?"
[1:22]: "Why does a 10x10 grid represent hundredths?"
[2:12]: "Where would 0.5 live? What about 0.55?"
[2:28]: Key Moment - Focus on how tenths are split into tiny hundredths.
20 min
Play
Decimal War Card Game
- Pairs split the deck of decimal cards.
- Flip cards simultaneously.
- Winner must state: "My number is larger because I have [X] tenths and you only have [Y] tenths..."
- If values are equal, it's a "War" (flip 3 face down, 1 face up).

Strategy
The Strategy Session
Gather students to discuss their "winning" moves. Ask:
"Why is looking at the tenths place first more important than how many digits are in the number?"
Relate back to the video's "zoom" effect. Tenths are the 'big pieces' of the decimal world.

Misconception Reveal
Return to the 0.19 vs 0.2 vote. Use a place value chart or hundredths grid to show that 0.2 (2 tenths) covers more area than 0.19 (1 tenth and 9 hundredths).
Differentiation & Scaffolding
Support
Provide students with physical hundredths grids and crayons to color in the values on their cards during the game to visually prove who won.
Extension
Add cards with thousandths (e.g., 0.199) to the deck and ask students to predict if they would beat 0.2 based on what they know about place value.

Tenths are 10 TIMES BIGGER than hundredths.

Decimal War Rules
FLIP
Both players flip a decimal card at the same time.
JUSTIFY
Winner must explain WHY their card is larger using place value.
WAR
Same value? Flip 3 down, 1 up. Winner takes all!
"I have 2 tenths, you only have 1 tenth and 9 hundredths."

Even though 19 is a "bigger number" than 2, digits further to the left always have more value!

Watch Out for the "Length Trap"!
Just because a number has more digits (0.19) doesn't mean it's worth more than a shorter number (0.2)!
