Lesson Flow
1. Mystery Bag Warm-up
5 MIN
Pass around a bag containing different plastic or real Singapore coins. Students reach in (no peeking!) and feel the coins.
"What do you feel? Is it cold? Is it round? Is it smooth or bumpy? How many coins do you think are in there?"
2. Coin Safari (Video Viewing)
10 MIN
Watch the "Coins of Singapore" video. Pause at the following timestamps to allow students to find the matching coin in their own pile:
- 0:09 1¢ Coin: Discuss the bronze color. "What number do you see?"
- 0:49 20¢/50¢ Coins: Look at the edges. "Is it smooth or bumpy?" Discuss the silver color.
- 1:20 $1 Coin: Introduce the $ sign. "Look! A flower! This coin is different."
3. Coin Sorting Race
10 MIN
Students work in pairs. Each pair has a mixed pile of coins and 6 labeled cups (1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, 50¢, $1).
Rules
- Find all the "Gold" coins first.
- Separate the big ones from small ones.
- Match the number on the coin to the cup label.
Teacher Tip
Circulate and help students notice the scalloped edges of the 50¢ coin and the larger size of the $1 coin.
4. Closure & Reflection
5 MIN
Gather students and ask:
- "Which coin was the easiest to find? Why?" (Color? Size?)
- "Which coin is the biggest?"
- "Which coins are silver?"
Support
Provide the Reference Sheet with color-coded borders to help match coins to labels.
Challenge
Ask students to stack their sorted coins and see which stack is the tallest. Which coin do we have the most of?
