Key Terms for Students
Rhetorical Fluff: Emotional appeals, personal anecdotes that don't prove a point, repetitive emphasis, and stylistic "flavor" that complicates the logic.
The Warrant: The bridge. If the Evidence is "It's raining" and the Claim is "I should bring an umbrella," the Warrant is "Umbrellas keep you dry."

Why Use This Grid?
Synthesizing multiple sources is one of the highest cognitive loads students face. They must:
Hold Source A in memory while reading Source B.
Identify intersections (agreement/disagreement).
Organize intersections into categories.
The matrix collapses these three tasks into one visual workspace.

The most critical gap is often Source 1 / Equity or Source 2 / Integrity. Students should realize that without the Dean's stance on Equity, the Student Union's concerns cannot be addressed or rebutted.

The conflict in Job Readiness is stark. Dean (Classics/Preserving minds) vs. CEO (AI Skills/Employability). This is the "meat" of a potential research paper.

Avoiding the "Source Summary" Trap

The 5-Minute Thesis Challenge
A great thesis statement shouldn't just name the topic. It should summarize the conflict in the matrix.

Criteria Developing (1) Proficient (2) Mastery (3) Integration Sources are summarized one at a time ("Source A says... Source B says..."). Paragraphs mention multiple sources but connections are loose. Sources are woven together using transition words to show relationships. Attribution Sources are confused or not clearly identified. Sources are mostly credited correctly. Signal phrases ("According to...") clearly distinguish authors. Thesis Scope Thesis is just a broad topic name. Thesis states a claim but ignores the complexity/conflict. Thesis captures both consensus and conflict found in the matrix.
