Grade 4 Place Value
🍂 The Base-Ten Relationship
Pumpkin Patch Place Values
Discover the magic of base-ten: every step to the left is 10 times greater, and every step to the right is one-tenth (\(\frac{1}{10}\))!
⬅️
Move Left: 10× Greater
10 times the value of the place to the right
➡️
Move Right: \(\frac{1}{10}\) the Value
One-tenth the value of the place to the left
Base-Ten Structure
Moving Left: Multiply by 10

⬅️ Each step to the left bundles 10 of the previous unit! 10 × Previous Place = Next Place
Rule: A digit in any position represents 10 times its value in the position to its right.
The Inverse Relationship
Moving Right: One-Tenth the Value (\(\frac{1}{10}\))
➗ 10 \(\frac{1}{10}\) of the Position to the Left
What Does "One-Tenth" Mean?
If you take a crate of 100 pumpkins and divide it into 10 equal baskets, each basket holds 10 pumpkins.
• 10 is \(\frac{1}{10}\) of 100 (100 ÷ 10 = 10)
• 100 is \(\frac{1}{10}\) of 1,000 (1,000 ÷ 10 = 100)
• 1 is \(\frac{1}{10}\) of 10 (10 ÷ 10 = 1)
Look at the Number: 5,555
5 in the Hundreds Place: 500
5 in the Tens Place: 50
50 is one-tenth (\(\frac{1}{10}\)) of 500!
💡 Summary: Move Left = \( \times 10 \) (10 times) | Move Right = \( \div 10 \) (\(\frac{1}{10}\) the value).

Ten Times as Great (10×)
The 6 in the ten-thousands place (60,000) is 10 times the value of the 6 in the thousands place (6,000).
60,000 = 10 × 6,000
2
One-Tenth the Value (\(\frac{1}{10}\))
The 6 in the hundreds place (600) is one-tenth (\(\frac{1}{10}\)) the value of the 6 in the thousands place (6,000).
600 = 6,000 ÷ 10 = \(\frac{1}{10}\) of 6,000
Key insight: Look at the direction! Left is 10 times; right is one-tenth.

Problem A: 5 × 36 = 5 × (30 + 6)
Box 1: 5 × 30 = 150 | Box 2: 5 × 6 = 30
Total: 150 + 30 = 180
Problem B: 4 × 73 = 4 × (70 + 3)
Box 1: 4 × 70 = 280 | Box 2: 4 × 3 = 12
Total: 280 + 12 = 292
Section 2: Partial Quotients Division (3 pts)
1.5 pts per problem
Problem 1: 78 ÷ 3
3 ) 78
- 60 (3 × 20) ➔ 20
18 left
- 18 (3 × 6) ➔ 6
Total: 20 + 6 = 26
Problem 2: 92 ÷ 4
4 ) 92
- 80 (4 × 20) ➔ 20
12 left
- 12 (4 × 3) ➔ 3
Total: 20 + 3 = 23
Section 3: Strategy Comparison (2 pts)
1 pt algorithm, 1 pt connection
Standard Algorithm: 47 × 6
6 × 7 = 42 (record 2, carry 4 tens)
6 × 4 = 24 tens + 4 = 28 tens ➔ 282
Check with Area Model:
(6 × 40) + (6 × 7) = 240 + 42 = 282
Both methods yield 282: YES
Section 4: Monster Lab Word Problem (2 pts)
1 pt per step
Step 1: Multiply Total Elixir
7 × 34 = 238 mL
(7 × 30 = 210) + (7 × 4 = 28) = 238 mL total
Step 2: Divide by 2 Monsters
238 ÷ 2 = 119 mL
119 mL per monster

Multiplication & Division Assessment Scoring
Total: 4 Points
Item 1: Area Model: 6 × 54 (1.5 Points)
Deconstruct 54 into 50 + 4.
Box 1: 6 × 50 = 300 | Box 2: 6 × 4 = 24
Total Product: 300 + 24 = 324
Common error: Multiplying 6 × 5 as 30 instead of 300.
Item 2: Partial Quotients: 84 ÷ 4 (1.5 Points)
Chunk 1: 4 × 20 = 80 (subtract from 84 ➔ 4 left)
Chunk 2: 4 × 1 = 4 (subtract from 4 ➔ 0 left)
Final Quotient: 20 + 1 = 21
