Objective
Students will distinguish between 2D (flat) and 3D (solid) objects through tactile exploration and physical movement.
Materials
Paper circle (flat)
Drinking cup (solid)
"Mystery Box" of objects
Dimensional Detective Worksheet
Key Terms
2D / Flat 3D / Solid Dimension
The Hook: The Water Test
Hold up a paper circle and a real cup. Ask: "I'm really thirsty. Should I pour my water onto this paper circle or into this cup?" Let a few students explain why the circle won't work. Introduce the concept: "The circle is FLAT . It has no room inside! The cup is FAT (solid). It takes up space!"
1 Tactile Discovery
The Task
Give each student one flat shape (cut from cardstock) and one matching solid shape (block, ball, etc.). Have them close their eyes and feel the difference.
Prompting Questions
"Which one can you hide inside your flat hand?"
"Which one 'pops out' when you hold it?"
2 The Movement Game
Pull objects from your Mystery Box one by one. Students must respond instantly with the correct movement:
FLAT
CLAP ONCE
FAT / SOLID
STOMP TWICE
Meeting All Learners
Scaffolding:
Use highly contrasting pairs (a thin sheet of paper vs. a large beach ball) to make the dimension difference very obvious.
Extension:
Challenge students to find one "flat" thing and one "fat" thing in their backpacks or cubbies.
