Present a complex problem without a routine: "If I buy 3 packs of nails for $4 each and pay with a $20 bill, how much change do I get?"
"Ask: Why can't I just subtract $20 - $4? What is missing? This is a 'multi-step' problem—like a building that needs a foundation before the walls."
2. Blueprint Modeling (15 mins)
Introduce the Anchor Chart . Model the routine using a decimal-based problem:
Step 1: Survey
Highlight the question. Write "Goal: Find change."
Step 2: Draft
Identify Step A (Cost of 3 packs) and Step B (Subtraction from $20).
3. Construction Zone (20 mins)
Hand out the Construction Zone Worksheet . Complete the first two problems together. Focus on identifying the hidden question (Step A).
