Lesson 1: Sensory Discovery
The Hook: Mystery Bag
"I have a secret bag today... it's very hard for me to lift! Why do you think that is?"
Invite 2-3 students to try and lift a bag filled with heavy books. Use their reactions to introduce the word HEAVY .
Vocabulary Support
Heavy
Pushes down hard. Makes your muscles work!
Light
Easy to lift. Feels like nothing is there.
Hefting Protocol
Hands out: Have students hold both palms up like a scale.
Add objects: Place a rock in one, a feather in the other.
The "Heft": Gently move hands up and down to feel the mass.
Label: "This hand is pushing down! It is heavy!"
Differentiation
For students who need more support: Focus on extreme contrasts (Bowling ball vs. Cotton ball).
For advanced learners: Ask them to find two objects that are both "heavy" and try to decide which is heavier .

Lesson 2: Instructional Script
The Concept
In this lesson, we move from the sensory feeling of hefting to the visual evidence of a tool. The movement of the scale (Down = Heavy) is the primary concept.
Demonstration Steps

Empty Scale: Show the scale balanced. "It's a straight line! It's equal."

The Drop: Add a heavy object. Exaggerate the movement with your body. "Whoa! It crashed down! That must be HEAVY."

The Float: Add a light object to the other side. "Look at this one... it's hiding up high! It is LIGHT."
Be the Scale (Kinesthetic)
Guide students to stand up and extend their arms. Call out scenarios:
"I'm putting an elephant in your left hand!"
"I'm putting a balloon in your right hand!"
"Now both hands have a tiny ant!"
Check for Understanding
Ask: "If the scale goes DOWN on this side, is the toy heavy or light?" (Wait for choral response: HEAVY!)

Lesson 3: Hypothesize and Verify
Learning Objective
Students will make a prediction (hypothesis) about which of two objects is heavier and use a balance scale to verify their thinking, recording results on a simple chart.
Preparation
One Pan Balance per small group or one for whole-class demonstration.
The Pairs: Plush bear & metal car, Leaf & pinecone, Apple & grape.
Marking Tools: Orange crayons for prediction, Blue for results.
Guiding Questions
"Before we touch them, which one looks like it would push the scale down?"
"Now 'heft' them. Does your hand agree with your eyes?"
"If the apple went down and the grape went up, which one is heavy?"
Misconception Alert
Young students often assume bigger = heavier . The Plush Bear vs. Metal Car pair is designed to challenge this. If the metal car is heavy enough, it might be heavier than a large light plush.

The Setup
Place two real physical buckets in the center of the rug:
Blue Bucket: "The Floating Bucket" (Light)
Orange Bucket: "The Hungry Heavy Bucket" (Heavy)
How to Play

Give each student one classroom object (block, pencil, book, tissue).

Students walk around and compare their object with a friend's object. "Mine is heavier!"

The Feeding Phase:

Lesson 5: Size vs. Weight Guide
The Goal
To challenge the developmental assumption that bigger objects must be heavier . Students will find that identical boxes can have different weights, and small things can be heavier than big things.
Box Setup
Prepare 3 identical boxes (small jewelry boxes or plastic containers work well) labeled 1, 2, and 3:

Box 1 (Lightest): Filled with cotton balls or air.

Box 2 (Middle): Filled with wooden blocks or beans.
3
Box 3 (Heaviest): Filled with sand, metal washers, or coins.
Guided Inquiry
Q: "Look at these three boxes. They are exactly the same size. Do you think they weigh the same?"
A: Most students will say yes. Use the Balance Scale to prove them wrong!
"Even if things look the same on the outside, what's INSIDE matters for weight!"
The Ordering Task
Show students how to use the scale to compare two boxes at a time.
