Lesson 1: Auditing Working Memory Bottlenecks

Lesson Purpose
Students often blame "laziness" or "lack of intelligence" for academic failures that are actually structural failures of working memory. This lesson reframes these struggles as "bottlenecks"—predictable points where mental load exceeds mental capacity. By identifying these points, students begin to see a pathway toward independence through visual support.

The "Mental Workbench" Hook
Start with a rapid-fire verbal instruction: "Write down your name, your favorite color, the square root of 64, and the third letter of the alphabet, then stand up and turn in a circle." Most students will miss at least one part. Use this to introduce the "Workbench" slide. Emphasize that their brains aren't broken—the bench is just full.

Defining the Bottlenecks
Present the three types of bottlenecks using the slide deck. Use these relatable high school examples:
Branching: Following a rubric with 10 steps for a bibliography.
Context: Writing the body paragraph and forgetting it's supposed to support the thesis.
Translation: Having a "perfect" sentence in mind but losing it while typing the first three words.
25-40m
Detective Work: Case Study
Distribute the Memory Audit Worksheet . Have students read the "Incident Report" (Marcus’s Lab Disaster). In pairs, students should circle the specific sentences where Marcus's memory failed and label them with the bottleneck type.
Pro-Tip: Encourage students to share a time they felt like Marcus. Normalize the frustration—the goal is to move from "frustrated" to "tactical."

Personal Audit
Students complete the "Personal History" section of the worksheet. They should identify one specific class or project where they hit a wall. This data will be used in Lesson 2 to create their first visual aid.

For students struggling with metacognition, provide a list of school subjects and specific tasks (e.g., "Math: Multi-step equations") to help trigger memories of bottlenecks.
Extension
