1. Double-Counting or Skipping Gems:
Students skip a crystal or count it twice when working with multiple objects. Intervention: Encourage students to physically cross out or place a real block over each crystal as they count it.
2. Reversing Numbers (e.g., 3 and 5):
Kindergarteners commonly reverse handwriting digits. Intervention: Use tactile number cards to trace digits before writing on the sheet. Emphasize that reversed numbers represent correct amounts but need geological alignment!
3. Treating the "+" and "=" as Decorative:

Common Subtraction Misconceptions & Intervention Prompts
1. Incorrect Minuend (Starting Total):
Students write the active (non-crossed) count as the first number instead of the total starting count. Intervention: Say: "Before any crystals cracked, how many did we have in total? Let's count them all first."
2. Reversing the Minuend and Subtrahend:
Students write the smaller number first (e.g. 3 - 5 = 2). Intervention: Remind them: "The big stack of gems always goes first! We can only take away from what we have."
