The Hook
"Friends, Mother Duck is very worried! Her five little ducks are going on an adventure, but they keep swimming away one by one. Every time a duck leaves, our number gets smaller. Can you help me count how many are left so Mother Duck knows when they are all gone?"
Step-by-Step Song Simulation
1
Set the Stage
Place 5 ducks on a 'pond' (a blue cloth or paper). Have students sit in a circle around the pond.
2
Start the Song
Sing: "Five little ducks went out one day, over the hills and far away..."
3
The Disappearance
When Mother Duck says "Quack, quack, quack, quack," physically remove one duck and hide it behind your back.
4
The Count Down
Crucial Step!
"How many ducks are left? Let's count them: 1... 2... 3... 4. Four! We had 5, now we have 4. That is one less!"
Discussion Prompts
"Are there more ducks or fewer ducks than when we started?"
"What number comes before 5 when we count down?"
"When we reach 'Zero', what does that look like in our pond?"
"Why do we count backward when things go away?"

Astronaut Training Guide
Primary Objective
Practice the rote verbal sequence of counting backward from 10 to 1 with excitement and physical engagement.
Launch Protocol
1
The Prep
Students find their "launch pad" (space on the rug). They must stand up tall like a rocket ship waiting on the ground.
2
The Squat
As the countdown starts at 10, students begin to crouch. By the time they hit 5, they should be in a deep squat.
3
The Whisper
Count 10 through 6 in a normal voice. Count 5 through 1 in an intense whisper to build anticipation.
4
BLAST OFF!
On "Zero" (or right after "One"), students jump as high as they can with arms stretched toward the ceiling.
Astronaut Check-In
"What number did we start with?"
"What number comes before 10?"
"Why do we count down for a rocket?"
"Can you show me what 'Less' looks like with your body?"

Reverse Walk Teacher Guide Reverse Path Walkers
Setup & Game Guide
The Setup
Tape the large Number Path Floor Cards in a straight line (or curve) from 1 to 10.
Ensure there is enough space for a student to stand on each card comfortably.
Mark the 10 as the "Starting Line" for this activity.
The Reverse Walk
Basic Game
Student starts at 10. They must say "Ten" before stepping backward to 9. Repeat until they reach 1.
Challenge Mode
The teacher calls out "Stop!" or "Freeze!". The student must identify which number they are standing on without looking down.
Connecting Space & Sequence
Walking backward is a physical metaphor for the "counting down" concept. As students move away from the high numbers toward 1, emphasize that they are getting closer to the beginning of the path.
Facilitation Prompts
"If you take one step backward, will the number be bigger or smaller?"
"Which number is 'behind' 8 when we walk backward?"
"Can you find the number that comes right before 5?"
