Why This Schedule Works

Predictability

The 15-minute increments provide a high level of predictability, which reduces anxiety for students who struggle with transitions or "empty time."

Step-by-Step Launch

Prepare the Materials

Laminate the schedule and break board. Use a dry-erase marker for checking off tasks. This allows the student to physically "finish" an activity.

The "Hand-Over-Hand" Phase

For the first 3-5 days, walk the student to the schedule at every transition. Help them check the time, look at the visual, and then perform the task.

Introduce Choice

When a "Break" or "Choice Time" appears on the schedule, present the Choice Board immediately. This reinforces that the schedule leads to positive rewards.

Troubleshooting Transitions

Issue: Refusal to move to next task

Solution: Use a 5-minute visual timer alongside the schedule. Refer back to the schedule: "The schedule says Reading is finished, now it's Brain Break."

Issue: Student checking off everything at once

Solution: Keep the marker with the teacher or paraprofessional until the specific transition occurs.
