Strategy 1 Mental Toolkit
Split by Tens and Ones (Decomposing)
Friendly Numbers
Addition Strategy 48 + 35
1. Split the Tens: 40 + 30 = 70
2. Split the Ones: 8 + 5 = 13
3. Recombine: 70 + 13 = 83
Quick mental move: combine large values first, then finish with ones!
Subtraction Strategy 84 - 36
1. Take away Tens: 84 - 30 = 54
2. Take away Ones: 54 - 6 = 48
3. Final Difference: Difference = 48
Check with addition: does 48 + 36 = 84? Yes!
Tip: Keep the first number whole during subtraction!

The Switcheroo: Same Numbers, Different Signs
Sign Power
Operation: ADDITION GROWTH
63 + 28 = ?
Step 1 (Tens): 60 + 20 = 80
Step 2 (Ones): 3 + 8 = 11
Step 3 (Total): 80 + 11 = 91
The total got larger because we added!
Operation: SUBTRACTION SHRINK
63 - 28 = ?
Step 1 (Tens): 63 - 20 = 43
Step 2 (Ones): 43 - 8 = 35
Step 3 (Check): 35 + 28 = 63 ✓
