4 Core Foundations
Always True Rules
Rule 1 Zero Property
Any number multiplied by 0 is always 0.
\(8 \times 0 = 0\) | \(147 \times 0 = 0\)
Rule 2 Identity Property
Any number multiplied by 1 stays itself.
\(9 \times 1 = 9\) | \(32 \times 1 = 32\)
Rule 3 Flip-It Rule
Order does not change the answer.
\(7 \times 8 = 8 \times 7 = 56\)
Rule 4 Square Numbers
A number times itself makes a perfect square.
\(6 \times 6 = 36\) | \(12 \times 12 = 144\)
Multiplication Tips
High-Speed Mental Math Strategies • Factor by Factor
Memory Hacks
× 2 • The Double Easy
Just add the number to itself. Every product of 2 is an even number.
\(2 \times 7 = 7 + 7 = 14\)
× 4 • Double-Double Strategy
Double the number once, then double that answer again.
\(4 \times 6 \rightarrow 6 + 6 = 12 \rightarrow 12 + 12 = 24\)
× 5 • Clock / Half of 10 Pattern
All products end in 0 (even factor) or 5 (odd factor). Think of clock minutes!
\(5 \times 8 = 40\) (ends in 0) | \(5 \times 9 = 45\) (ends in 5)
× 8 • Triple-Double Strategy
Double the number three times in a row (\(2 \times 2 \times 2 = 8\)).
\(8 \times 7 \rightarrow 14 \rightarrow 28 \rightarrow 56\)
× 9 • Ten Minus One Magic Rule
Multiply by 10, then subtract the factor. Also: the digits always add to 9!
\(9 \times 6 = (10 \times 6) - 6 = 60 - 6 = 54\) \((5 + 4 = 9)\)
× 10 & × 11 • Zero & Twins Pattern
For 10, add a 0. For 11 (up to 9), repeat the single digit side-by-side.
\(10 \times 7 = 70\) | \(11 \times 7 = 77\)
× 3 & × 6 • Double + One More Breakdown
For 3: double the number and add one more. For 6: just double your 3s fact!
\(3 \times 7 = 14 + 7 = 21\) | \(6 \times 7 = 21 \times 2 = 42\)
× 12 • Ten Plus Two Split It
Multiply the number by 10, multiply it by 2, then add both answers together.
\(12 \times 7 = (10 \times 7) + (2 \times 7) = 70 + 14 = 84\)
The Ultimate Secret Stuck on 7s or 8s? Break Them Down!
You never have to guess a hard fact. Break tricky numbers into friendly numbers like 5 and 2:
\(7 \times 8 = (5 \times 8) + (2 \times 8) = 40 + 16 = 56\)
