Strategy Touch Math (Digits 1–10)
Setting Whole Group & Pairs
Learning Objectives
Solve truck delivery word problems modeling joining (addition), separating (subtraction), and comparing (difference).
Locate and count multisensory Touch Points accurately on digits 1 through 10 to add and subtract without finger-counting errors.
Essential Questions
"How does cargo movement (loading vs. unloading) tell us whether to add or subtract? How do Touch Points turn any written digit into a built-in counting tool?"

Three Delivery Story Schemas
Joining (Loading)
Truck begins with cargo; warehouse loads more crates. Total increases.
Start + Loaded = Total
Separating (Unloading)
Truck leaves terminal full; drops crates at supermarket. Remainder decreases.
Total - Delivered = Left
Comparing (Weigh-In)
Dump Truck A holds 8 pallets; Flatbed B holds 5. Finding "how many more/fewer".
Greater - Lesser = Difference

Pacing & Step-by-Step Instructional Delivery
Classroom Sequence
1. Dispatch Depot Hook & Warm-Up (10 min)
Engage
Introduce the class as "Junior Cargo Dispatchers." Model a toy truck or visual flatbed: "Truck 104 starts with 4 shipping containers. At Terminal B, the forklift loads 3 more containers. Did cargo get added or dropped off?" Guide students to trace Touch Points on the number 3 while saying "4... 5, 6, 7!"
2. Explicit Modeling: 3 Schemas + Touch Counting (15 min)
Instruct
Teach the 3 dispatch clues: Joining ("loaded onto", "picked up"), Separating ("delivered", "dropped off", "unloaded"), and Comparing ("how many more crates than", "how many fewer"). Model counting on using Touch Points for digits 1–9. For 10, emphasize: "10 is 1 ten-bundle; tap the 1 once, 0 has zero points!"
3. Guided Practice: Dispatch Mission Cards (15 min)
Collaborate
Students work in partner trucker pairs with the Guided Practice Document. Teacher circulates providing prompt cards: "Read the story, circle key cargo numbers, label the action (Join / Separate / Compare), and use the Touch Points to tally the exact load count."
4. Independent Freight Hauler Work & Assessment (15 min)
Evaluate
Students independently solve the Freight Haulers Worksheet. Formative checkpoint: check whether students touch points correctly on double-dot digits (6, 7, 8, 9) and write complete equations with operational symbols (\(+\), \(-\), \(=\)).
5. Cargo Inspection Debrief (5 min)
Synthesize
Ask: "If Semi Truck A has 9 barrels and Flatbed B has 6 barrels, which operation helps us compare their loads?" Students give thumbs up/down and share mental touch count steps.
Tiered Differentiation
Support (Tier 1): Provide tactile cargo blocks (Unifix cubes) alongside touch point numbers. Restrict numbers to sums within 10.
On-Level (Tier 2): Use pencil tap on Touch Points without counting cubes. Solve joining and separating with unknown totals or changes.
Extension (Tier 3): Multi-step truck route: 2 pickups then 1 delivery. Compare three freight loads and calculate total convoy weight.
Common Misconceptions
Comparing Confusion: Students see "more" in a comparison problem and mistakenly add. Remedy: Emphasize "Weigh Scale" matching pairs.
Double Dot Drift: On numbers 6–9, students tap double dots only once. Remedy: Chant "Touch the dot, touch the ring; double dots make numbers sing!"
The Digit 10: Students look for 10 individual dots on '10'. Remedy: Remind that 10 is 1 ten and 0 ones.
