The Blueprint Logic:

• Divide horizontally into 3 equal rows. Shade 2.
• Divide vertically into 5 equal columns. Shade 4.
• Numerator: Count the overlapping boxes (8).
• Denominator: Count all total boxes (15).

\(\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{4}{5} = \frac{8}{15}\)

Scaling Up: Mixed Numbers

Method: Proper Fractions

An architect needs to find the area of a rug that is \(1\frac{1}{2}\) feet by \(2\frac{1}{3}\) feet.

The Conversion Strategy:

\(1\frac{1}{2} = \frac{3}{2}\) (Multiply whole by denominator + numerator)

\(2\frac{1}{3} = \frac{7}{3}\) (2 wholes is 6/3, plus 1/3 more)

\(\frac{3}{2} \times \frac{7}{3} = \frac{21}{6}\)

\(\frac{21}{6} = 3\frac{3}{6} = 3\frac{1}{2}\) sq ft

The "Fair Share" Division

"We have \(\frac{1}{3}\) of a pan of brownies. If 4 students share it equally, how much does each student get?"

\(\frac{1}{3} \div 4\) Problem

\(\frac{1}{12}\) Solution

If you split one third into four pieces, each piece is 1 out of 12 total pieces in the whole pan.

The "Measurement" Division

"I have 3 large pizzas. If each serving is \(\frac{1}{4}\) of a pizza, how many servings do I have?"

Think about it:

How many fourths are in 3 wholes?

\(3 \div \frac{1}{4} =\) 12

Architect's Rule:

When you divide a whole number by a fraction smaller than 1, your answer gets BIGGER!
