The Briefing (Hook)
Introduce the "Bureau of Sneaker Statistics." Use the Bureau Briefing Slides to define the census mission. Briefly review definitions of Mean (Average), Median (Middle), Mode (Most), and Range (Spread).

Field Data Collection
Distribute the Census Collection Activity cards around the room. Students rotate to collect data on: Shoe Size, Brand, Main Color, and Fastening Type (Laces/Velcro). Note: Students record their own data on their classmate's tally sheets.

The Analytics Lab
Students return to their desks with the class data sets to complete the Statistical Sole Worksheet . They will perform calculations for center and variability using the "Shoe Size" data set specifically.

Press Release (Debrief)
Share findings. Does the "Mean" shoe size actually exist in the room? Why might the "Mode" be more useful for a sneaker company than the "Mean"? Discuss how outliers affect the data.

The middle value when data is ordered smallest to largest.
Mode
"The Trendsetter"
The value that appears most frequently in your data set.
Range
"The Boundaries"
The difference between the maximum and minimum values.
