The Golden Rule of Tens Town
Town Code: 10-1
NO DOUBLE DIGITS IN ONE COLUMN!
Each lane in our town is narrow. It can only hold single-digit citizens (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9).
If the Ones Lane has 10 or more block citizens...
WE MUST TRADE THEM FOR 1 TENS ROD!
The Trade-In Value
Trade
10 separate Ones cubes
become 1 solid Tens rod!
Unit: 2-Digit Addition with Regrouping Slide 2 of 7
1 Step 1: Draw the Numbers
Problem: 28 + 15
First, Draw 28
Draw 2 Tens (lines or rods) and 8 Ones (dots or cubes).
Next, Draw 15 Below
Draw 1 Ten and 5 Ones right below it.

ONES (CUBES)

(8 Ones)
(1 Ten)
(5 Ones)

2 Step 2: Combine & Count Ones
Problem: 28 + 15
Always Start with Ones!
Let's count all of our tiny ones cubes together. We had 8 ones, and we added 5 more.
ONONES OVERFLOW!
We have 13 ones cubes in the Ones lane. That breaks our Golden Rule!

3 Step 3: Trade & Regroup!
Problem: 28 + 15
How to Trade:
- Circle exactly 10 ones cubes.
- Convert them into 1 brand new Tens Rod.
- Carry that new rod over to the Tens Lane at the top!
Look at what is left: Only 3 ones cubes remain in the Ones lane! 3 is less than 10, so it's perfectly safe!

Write the 3 under the Ones, and carry the 1 over to the Tens. Then add 1 + 2 + 1 = 4 Tens!
We Finished the Build!
Our math blueprint is perfectly balanced! Let's tally the blocks we ended with:
4 TENS rods (originally 2 + 1, plus 1 carried over)
3 ONES cubes left over after the 10-cube trade
Our Final Masterpiece: 28 + 15 = 43!

Official Inspector Self-Checklist
- I drew the exact Tens & Ones for both numbers in the chart first.
- If I counted 10 or more ones, I circled them and traded them for 1 extra ten.
- I remembered to write the extra 1 ten at the top of the Tens column.
