Demolition Steps:

1. Build starting number 345 on the Subtraction Mat.
2. Need to take away 8 ones. Only 5 are there!
3. Smash 1 Ten into 10 Ones.
4. Now subtract 8 Ones, 2 Tens, 1 Hundred.

Scaffold Strip

A high-rise tower scaffolding had 437 safety poles. Workers removed 254 of them.

Demolition Steps:

1. Build starting number 437.
2. Ones: Subtract 4 ones (easy!).
3. Tens: Need to subtract 5 tens. Only 3 exist!
4. Smash 1 Hundred to get 10 Tens.
5. Subtract 5 tens & 2 hundreds. Record remaining.

Heavy Crane Drop

The warehouse had 524 steel crates. Forklifts transported 176 of them to ships.

Demolition Steps:

1. Build 524 on the mat.
2. Need ones: Smash 1 Ten for 10 Ones. Take 6.
3. Need tens: Smash 1 Hundred for 10 Tens. Take 7.
4. Subtract 1 Hundred. Count left overs.

Tip: For subtraction, remind students to ONLY build the starting (top) number on their mats. The bottom number is physically removed!

Playground Planks

A builder has 415 wood planks. She cuts and uses 238 planks for a sandbox. How many planks remain unused?

Demolition Steps:

1. Build starting number 415.
2. Need Ones: Trade the only 1 Ten for 10 Ones.
3. Take away 8 Ones. Now there are 0 Tens!
4. Need Tens: Trade 1 Hundred for 10 Tens. Take 3.
5. Take away 2 Hundreds and solve.

Trench Digging

The crew must dig a trench 304 meters long. They have completed 148 meters so far.

304 - 148 = ?

Demolition Steps:

1. Build starting number 304 (3 Hundreds, 0 Tens, 4 Ones).
2. Ones: Need to take 8. But there are 0 Tens to borrow from!
3. First, trade 1 Hundred for 10 Tens.
4. Now, trade 1 of those Tens for 10 Ones.
5. Subtract: 8 Ones, 4 Tens, 1 Hundred.

A solid block wall is made of 500 heavy bricks. The wrecking ball smashes down 236 bricks.

Demolition Steps:

1. Build starting number 500 (5 Hundreds, 0 Tens, 0 Ones).
2. Trade 1 Hundred for 10 Tens.
3. Trade 1 Ten for 10 Ones.
4. Now remove: 6 Ones, 3 Tens, 2 Hundreds.
5. Count the leftover blocks!

Pipes Transport

A plumbing squad loaded 702 copper pipe units. They unloaded 354 of them.

Demolition Steps:

1. Build starting number 702.
2. Need ones: Trade 1 Hundred for 10 Tens.
3. Now trade 1 Ten for 10 Ones. You have 12 Ones!
4. Subtract: 4 Ones, 5 Tens, 3 Hundreds.

Challenge Complete! If students struggle with zeros, guide them to physically trade the green Hundred flat first to see the 10 blue rods.
