Ten Ridge Slides Unit 1: Nearest 10
| Rounding Ridge
Level 1
Climbing Ten Ridge
Discovering rounding to the nearest ten using base-ten visual blocks and the magical Ten Ridge hill.
Goal: Will round multi-digit numbers to the nearest 10 Slide 1 of 5
Base-Ten Closeness: Which is Closer?
Let's look at the physical distance to our "Friendly Tens"
Friendly Tens: 30 & 40
Start Bench: 30
Exactly 30
Our Target
Our Number: 34
Only 4 away from 30!
But 6 away from 40.
End Bench: 40
Exactly 40
Takeaway: 34 is physically closer to 30. So, we round down to 30!
Slide 2 of 5
The Climbing Ten Ridge Hill
Where does the ball roll? Visualizing the tipping point.
Midpoint Peak: 5
30
Rolls Left (Down)
31 32 33 34
35
Peak: Rolls Right!
36 37 38 39
40
Rolls Right (Up)
Under the Peak (1, 2, 3, 4)
These numbers roll back down to the starting bench. Round DOWN !
At & Past the Peak (5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
Once you touch the peak (5), the ball slides forward to the end bench. Round UP !
Rule: If the ones digit is 5 or more , round up! If it is 4 or less , round down! Slide 3 of 5
Reducing Load: Color-Coded Place Value
Color helps us know exactly which digit to look at and which to change!
Example: Round 247 to the nearest 10
Hundreds
Tens (Target) (Underline & Focus)
Ones (Neighbor) (The Decision Maker)

4
7
Stays the same because we round the tens!
Will it stay 4 or go up to 5?
Since 7 is 5 or more, it rolls up!
Final Decision: 247 250
Color Rule: Green/Teal is Target. Yellow/Amber is Neighbor! Slide 4 of 5
Ten Ridge Challenges
Let's solve these together before your independent worksheet!
CHALLENGE A Nearest 10
Round 58
1. What are the benchmark tens? 50 and 60
2. Is the ones digit (8) 5 or more? YES!
Rolls up to 60!
CHALLENGE B Nearest 10
Round 142
1. What are the benchmark tens? 140 and 150
2. Is the ones digit (2) 5 or more? NO! (Rolls down)
Rolls down to 140!
Are we ready to climb higher? Next is your worksheet challenge! Slide 5 of 5

Goal: Will round multi-digit numbers to the nearest 100 Slide 1 of 5
Hundred Blocks: Seeing the Scale
Let's look at the size of our blocks. Which hundred-bench are we closer to?
Benches: 200 & 300
Starting Hundred: 200
Exactly 200
Our Target
Our Number: 230
Only 30 away from 200!
But 70 away from 300.

Lesson 1: Nearest 10
Introduce physical spacing using Base-Ten Blocks on Slide 2. Scaffold by drawing balls rolling down the Ten Ridge Hill (Slide 3) where the midpoint 5 is the turning point. Highlight that ones of 5-9 always push up.
Lesson 2: Nearest 100
Transition to hundred flats. The midpoint shifts to 50 on Slide 3. Use color-coded charts (Slide 4) to focus attention exclusively on target Hundreds and the neighbor Tens column.
Lesson 3: Nearest 1,000
Scale to the thousand-block cube. Midpoint is 500 . Conduct mixed board practice (Slide 5) before evaluating students using the final assessment. Maintain desk anchor charts for scaffolding.

Intervention Prompt Scripts (Verbal Check Questions)
When student hesitates: "Underline the place value place we want. Good. Now put your finger on its neighbor to the right. Is that neighbor number 5 or bigger? If yes, it climbs to the next benchmark. If no, it slips backward!"
To correct common misconception (e.g., rounding the hundreds place instead of tens): "Look at the color chart. When rounding to the nearest ten, only the ones neighbor determines the rule. The hundreds digit doesn't change!"
