The Summit Ranger Rule
Think of rounding as a mountain trail between two basecamps (multiples). If your target number is before the midpoint summit, you slide back to the Lower Basecamp. If you reach or pass the summit (the midpoint), hike onward to the Upper Basecamp!
Summit (Midpoint)
Lower Camp Upper Camp
Mission 1: Rounding to the Nearest Ten
Identify the basecamps and midpoint, plot the target, and make your decision.
Problem 1: Round 43 to the nearest Ten. Focus Value: Tens Place
Lower Camp 40
Summit (Midpoint) 45
Upper Camp 50
A
Is 43 before or after the summit of 45?
Plot 43 on the line above first!
B
Therefore, 43 rounds to which basecamp?
Problem 2: Round 176 to the nearest Ten. Focus Value: Tens Place
Lower Camp 170
Summit (Midpoint) _____
Upper Camp _____
A
Fill in the missing values on the line. What is the midpoint?
B
Does 176 round to 170 or 180?

Stage 2 Hundreds & Thousands
Mission 2: Rounding to the Nearest Hundred
Problem 3: Round 342 to the nearest Hundred. Focus Value: Hundreds Place
Lower Camp 300
Summit 350
Upper Camp 400
Which camp is 342 closest to?
Final Rounding Choice:
Mission 3: Rounding to the Nearest Thousand
Problem 4: Round 4,500 to the nearest Thousand. Summit Tiebreaker!
Lower Camp 4,000
Summit (Midpoint) 4,500
Upper Camp 5,000
Your position is exactly on the Summit Peak! Remember the Summit Ranger rule. What do you do?
Final Rounding Choice:
Ranger Solo Expedition
Draw a mini-number line or write your choice to solve.

1
The Summit Metaphor (5 Mins)
Students struggle with abstract "5 or more" rules because they don't understand scale. Use the Summit Ranger metaphor to ground their thinking.
Script: "Imagine we are hiking. We want to find which Basecamp is closer so we can rest. Our number lines are the trails. The endpoints are the Basecamps. The exact middle of our number line is the Summit. If we are on the mountain trail and have NOT reached the Summit (less than midpoint), we must slide back down to Lower Basecamp. If we make it to the Summit or pass it, we push forward to the Upper Basecamp!"
2
Modeling Nearest Ten (7 Mins)
Walk through Problem 1 (Rounding 43 to Ten) with explicit modeling on the board.
- Identify Endpoints: Ask, "What are the tens on either side of 43?" Write 40 (Lower Camp) and 50 (Upper Camp).
- Find the Summit (Midpoint): Ask, "What is the exact middle of 40 and 50?" (45). Explain that 45 is the Summit.
- Plot & Decide: Ask, "Where is 43? Is it before the summit or past it?" Draw a dot at 43. Since it is before the summit, we round down to 40.
3
Guided Scaffolding (10 Mins)
Have students solve Problem 2 (176) and Problem 3 (342) in pairs or together.
Focus: Problem 2 Let students fill in the blank midpoint (175) and Upper Camp (180). Prompt: "If our target is 176, did we pass the summit? Yes! Walk forward to 180."
Focus: Problem 3 Scale up to Hundreds. Endpoint camps are 300 and 400. The Summit is 350. Since 342 is before 350, we slide back down to 300.
4
Summit Tiebreakers & Solo Trail (8 Mins)
Address Problem 4 (4,500). Explain that being on the Summit is a special victory: "If you've reached the absolute top of the mountain (500 or 50), congratulations! You don't turn back. You have earned the right to go forward to the next camp."
Transition students to the Solo Expedition and Exit Ticket to gauge independent mastery.
