Retro Reverse Teacher Guide Teacher Guide
RETRO REVERSE
Subtracting Negatives via the "Backtrack Runway"
GRADE LEVEL 6th - 8th Grade DURATION 45 - 60 Mins
Core Learning Objectives
Visualize subtraction of negative integers using directional movement.
Define subtraction as turning to face the opposite direction .
Execute equations like \( a - (-b) \) and explain why they result in addition.
Materials & Setup
Retro Reverse Student Worksheets (1 per student)
Interactive Slide Deck (or chalkboard/floor layout)
Optional: Painter's tape to make a physical "Floor Runway"
1 player token or figure per student group
The Conceptual Model: The "Runway Movement" Rules
Traditional rules (like "Keep-Change-Change") lack visual intuition. The Runway Movement Model turns subtraction into physical navigation on a horizontal 8-bit scale:
Step 1: The Start
Stand at the first number \( a \). Always start facing Right (Positive).
Step 2: The Sign
Look at the operator.
\( + \) means Face Forward .
\( - \) means Turn Around (face Left).
Step 3: The Steps
Positive step: Walk Forward .
Negative step: Walk Backward.
Instructional Script & Pacing
1. Warm-Up: Directional Prep (5 Mins)
Phase 1
Prompt students: "Imagine standing on a giant number line. If you are facing Right (the positive numbers) and I tell you to take 3 steps backward , which way do you end up moving?"
Answer: Left, toward negative numbers. "What if you turn around to face Left (the negative numbers) and I tell you to take 2 steps backward ? Which way do you move?"
Answer: Right, toward positive numbers. Connect physical orientation with arithmetic signs!
2. The Big Reveal: Subtraction as "Turning Around" (15 Mins)
Phase 2
Project Slide 4 or draw a giant number line. Let's model \( 2 - (-3) \).
• "We start at 2." Stand on 2 facing Right (towards positive numbers).
• "Next is subtraction. Subtraction is the opposite of addition. So we TURN AROUND." Pivot physically to face Left (negative side).
• "The next term is -3. A negative step means walk BACKWARD." Take 3 steps backward (which moves you right!).
• "Where did we land?" We landed at \( 5 \). So \( 2 - (-3) = 5 \). Explain that turning around and walking backward makes us move in our original forward direction.

Guided Exploration & Solutions
3. Collaborative Practice: Partner Play (15 Mins)
Phase 3
Have students work in pairs on the **Retro Reverse Worksheet**. Encourage them to trace each step with a pencil, finger, or game token on the mini runways provided. Monitor conversations. Watch for students who forget to pivot their character during subtraction, or who mistake "negative step" for "move to the left" instead of "walk backward relative to where you are facing".
4. Misconception Alert & Red Flags
Crucial
The "Double Negative" Slip: Students often memorize "two negatives make a positive" and turn every minus sign into a plus without understanding. Force them to verbalize: "Because I turned around, and walked backwards, I actually traveled forwards!"
Scaffolding (Struggling Learners)
Have them physically walk along a masking tape number line on the floor. Ask them to physically turn around on "minus" and walk backward on "negative". This physical sensation is highly effective for kinetic learners.
Extensions (Fast Finishers)
Challenge them to write a "Rule Book" for a 2D grid number plane (with X and Y directions). How would subtraction and negative direction work if we can turn 90 degrees?

Warm-Up:
• \( 4 + 3 = 7 \) (Start at 4, face Right, walk 3 steps forward)
• \( 4 - 3 = 1 \) (Start at 4, turn Left, walk 3 steps forward)
Level 1: Single Negatives
• \( 2 - (-4) = 6 \) (Start at 2, turn Left, walk 4 steps back)
• \( -3 - (-3) = 0 \) (Start at -3, turn Left, walk 3 steps back)
Level 2: The Deep Arcade
• \( 1 - (-5) = 6 \) (Start at 1, turn Left, walk 5 steps back)
• \( -4 - (-2) = -2 \) (Start at -4, turn Left, walk 2 steps back)
Boss Battle: \( -2 - (-6) = 4 \) (Start at -2, face Right, turn Left to face negative, walk 6 steps backward to land on positive 4)
Exit Ticket Answers
Problem 1: \( 3 - (-2) \)
• Draw arrow ending at \( 5 \).
• Landing Coordinate: \( 5 \).
Problem 2: Explain the movement
• "Start at 1, turn left (subtraction), walk backward 4 units (negative step), which moves you forward to 5."
Problem 3: Challenge
• Equation: \( -2 - (-5) = 3 \)
• "The player starts at -2, turns around on subtraction, walks backwards 5 steps, landing on 3."

THE CONTROLLER RULES
How to Move
1. Start
Stand at your starting number . You always begin facing Right (Positive direction).
2. The Sign
Look at the sign:
• Add (\(+\)): Keep facing Right.
• Subtract (\(-\)): Turn Around to face Left.
3. The Steps
Move your steps:
• Positive number: Walk Forward .
• Negative number: Walk Backward.
Remember: Subtraction means TURN, Negative means BACKWARD!
DEMO ROUND: \( 3 - (-2) \)
Watch Closely
1
Start at \( 3 \) . You are facing Right.
2
Subtract! Turn Around. Now you are facing the Left (Negative direction).
3
Move \( -2 \) steps . Walk backward 2 steps. This moves you to the Right, landing on \( 5 \)!
VISUALIZNG ON THE RUNWAY
Backward Movement (moves Right) →
-2 -1 0 1 2 3 (Start) 4 5 (End)
\( 3 - (-2) = 5 \)
Turning left and walking backwards moves you forward!
CO-OP MULTIPLAYER MISSION
Partner Quest
Solve with your Partner:
\( -2 - (-4) \)
Discuss with your teammate:
Where does the player place their avatar to start?
What happens to their body orientation on the "minus"?
Which direction do they take physical steps to handle the \(-4\)?
CHALLENGE WALKTHROUGH
Stand at: -2
Subtraction command: Turn to Left
Walk -4 steps: 4 steps backwards (Right)
Final Landing Pad: \( 2 \)
Work together — ensure BOTH partners can demonstrate the steps! Timer: 2:00
MISSION RECAP: THE SECRET CHEAT CODE
Victory
Why does subtracting a negative number result in adding?
When you turn around (to face the negative numbers) and walk backwards, you end up moving in the exact same direction as if you had just walked forward!
\( a - (-b) \) is exactly equivalent to \( a + b \).
