The Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) Bridge
1. Concrete (Hands-On)
Use base-ten blocks or place value chips on the printable Place Value Mat. Physically exchange 1 flat (100) for 10 rods (10s), or 1 cube (1,000) for 10 flats. Physically observe why a 0 cannot directly give to ones without passing through tens.
2. Representational (Drawn)
Students draw base-ten sketches (squares, lines, dots) and physically cross out the regrouped place value with slash marks, drawing an arrow to the right showing 10 new items arriving before subtraction.
3. Abstract (Algorithm)
Use "Crutch Boxes" above each column on the worksheet. Cross out the top digit, write the decremented value, and combine 10 with the existing digit (e.g., cross 2, write 12). For zero, enforce the intermediate step: 0 becomes 10, then 9.

The "Empty Vault" (Subtracting Across Zeros) Prompt:
"We need ones, so we knock on the tens door. But the tens vault has a zero! Can zero lend us anything yet? No! So the tens must knock on the hundreds door first. Hundreds gives 1 to make 10 tens. Now can the tens help the ones? Yes! 10 tens becomes 9 tens, giving 10 singles to the ones!"
