Teacher Think-Aloud Script:
1. Identify the Unknown: "First, I ask: What do I not know? 'A mystery number.' I'll label it as variable \(n\)."
2. Hunt for Operation Signals: "I see 'triple'. Triple means multiply by 3, so \(3n\). Next, I spot 'less than' . That's a Turn-Around Alert! When I say '8 less than something', I start with that quantity and subtract 8 at the end: \(3n - 8\)."
3. Locate the Balance Point: "The word 'is' signals our equal sign (\(=\)). So my translated equation is \(3n - 8 = 22\)."
High-Yield 9th Grade Rule: "Turn-Around" Words
Phrases like "less than" , "subtracted from" , and "fewer than" reverse the written order.
