Target Standard CCSS 6.RP.A.1
Understand ratio concept & use ratio language.
Core Objective Compare & Notate
Write ratios 3 ways; classify part:part vs part:whole.
Required Materials Manipulatives & Print
2-color counters (15/student), slide deck, activity sheet.
Essential Vocab Comparison Terms
Ratio, terms, colon (:), part-to-part, part-to-whole.
Instructional Timeline (60 Minutes) Structured Gradual Release (I Do, We Do, You Do)

3. Guided (15m)
4. Apply (15m)
5. Assess (5m)
1 Phase 1: Hook & Notice-Wonder (10 Minutes)
Slide 1–2 • Whole Class
Display Slide 2 displaying a recipe with 3 cups of crushed strawberries to 2 cups of sparkling lemonade. Ask: "What mathematical relationship do you notice between the red cups and yellow cups?"
Teacher Prompt: "Can we describe this without just saying there are 5 cups in total? How do the two ingredients relate to each other?"
Look For: Students noting "for every 3 strawberries there are 2 lemonades" or comparing quantities using multiplicative language.
2 Phase 2: Explicit Teaching & Notations (15 Minutes)
Slide 3–4 • Direct Instruction
Formally define a ratio : A comparison of two quantities by division. Emphasize that the order of terms is non-negotiable.
Word Form "3 to 2"
Written with word 'to'
Colon Form "3 : 2"
Read as "3 to 2"
Fraction Form \( \frac{3}{2} \)
Top is 1st, bottom is 2nd
Critical Key Point: Remind students that in fraction notation \( \frac{3}{2} \), this does NOT mean 1 and a half in this context; it represents 3 units of the first item compared to 2 units of the second item.

3 Phase 3: Guided Practice with Visual Models (15 Minutes)
Slide 5–6 • Partner Pairs
Distribute two-color counters. Have pairs arrange 4 yellow counters and 6 red counters. Guide students through distinguishing between:
Part-to-Part Comparison Yellow to Red = 4:6 (or 2:3). Compares two separate sub-groups.
Part-to-Whole Comparison Yellow to Total = 4:10 (or 2:5). Compares one sub-group to the combined total.
4 Phase 4: Independent Application (15 Minutes)
Student Activity Sheet • Individual
Students complete the Ratio Radar Activity Sheet . Circulate and check for notation precision, correct order of terms, and ability to distinguish part-to-part from part-to-whole questions.
5 Phase 5: Synthesis & Exit Ticket (5 Minutes)
Exit Ticket • Formative Check
Collect the Ratio Radar Exit Ticket before dismissal. Sort into three piles (Mastered, Minor Notation Errors, Needs Conceptual Re-teaching) to guide tomorrow's warm-up.
Common Misconception Radar
Reversing the Terms: Writing \( 6:4 \) instead of \( 4:6 \) when asked for yellow to red. Fix: Have students write verbal labels above numbers (e.g. \( \frac{\text{Yellow}}{\text{Red}} = \frac{4}{6} \)).
Confusing Part with Whole: Answering \( 4:6 \) when asked for "yellow to all counters." Fix: Emphasize finding total count first by adding parts: \( 4 + 6 = 10 \).
Differentiation & ELL Scaffolds
Support (Tier 2 / ELL): Provide Sentence Stems: "For every ___ [Item A], there are ___ [Item B]." Color-code counters directly to written numerals.
Extension (Advanced): Challenge students to simplify ratios to simplest form and create 3-way ratios (e.g., strawberry : lemon : ice = \( 3:2:5 \)).

Core Concept Definition & Meaning
Formal Definition
A ratio is a mathematical comparison of two quantities by division.
Rule 1: Order Matters!
If a question asks for Strawberries to Lemons , Strawberries must be named first: 3 to 2 (never 2 to 3!).
Rule 2: Multiplicative
Ratios show how much of one thing exists for every amount of another. If we double strawberries to 6, we must double lemons to 4!

Notation Toolkit Three Standard Formats
Expressing Ratios: 3 Valid Notations
All three represent the exact same mathematical relationship. You must be able to recognize and write all three!
1. Word Form
3 to 2
Uses the English word "to"
2. Colon Form
3 : 2
Read aloud as "3 to 2"
3. Fraction Form
\( \frac{3}{2} \)
First term on top , second on bottom
Notice: Fraction form does NOT mean 1.5 here — it means 3 per every 2! Slide 4 of 7
