Foreman Facilitation Guide
Problem Solvers Workshop: Tier 2 Intervention
GRADE 2 Intervention
Learning Objective
Students will represent and solve one-step addition and subtraction word problems (within 20) using drawings, manipulatives, and equations with a symbol for the unknown.
Standard (CO 2.OA.1): Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one-step word problems... using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown.
Materials
- Connecting cubes (20/student)
- Small group whiteboards
- Workshop Blueprint Slides
- Student Activity Sheets
Step 1: Act It Out (10 min)
Objective: Visualize the action of the problem.
Prompt: "We are construction workers today! Let's act out our first project."
Scenario: "Sam has 8 bricks. Then he buys 5 more bricks. How many bricks does he have now?"
- Have one student hold 8 cubes.
- Have another student 'deliver' 5 more cubes.
- Ask: "Is the number getting bigger or smaller? Are we joining or taking away?"
Step 2: Sorting Situations (10 min)
Objective: Identify the operation based on context.
Addition (Joining)
Join, Together, More, All, Total
Subtraction (Separating)
Separate, Away, Fewer, Left, Standing
Use the "Blueprint Sorting" activity. Ask: "Is the number getting bigger (joining) or smaller (separating)?"
Step 3: Drawing & Equations (15 min)
Scaffold the move from cubes to paper.
The Blueprint Strategy:
- Draw: Use circles or boxes to represent the "bricks".
- Label: Label the parts and the whole.
- Write: Create an equation with a box \(\square\) for the missing number.
Foreman's Warning: Common Misconceptions
- Keyword Confusion: Students might see "more" and assume addition, even if it's a comparison subtraction problem. Always ask: "What happened in the story?"
- Total Placement: Ensure students place the total (whole) correctly in the equation, especially for subtraction (e.g., \(12 - 5 = 7\) vs \(5 - 12\)).

The Project Goal
I can represent and solve addition and subtraction word problems using drawings and equations.
Draw It
Solve It
Step 1: Act It Out
Work Site Scenario:
Sam has 8 bricks. Then he buys 5 more bricks. How many bricks does he have now?
Are we JOINING?
Are we SEPARATING?
The Blueprint Strategy
1
DRAW
Sketch quick circles or boxes to represent the numbers.
2
LABEL
Mark your parts and find the whole.
3
EQUATION
Write a number sentence with a box \(\square\) for the missing part.
Job #1: Addition
Mia has 9 nails. Her partner gives her 7 more nails. How many nails does Mia have now?
Draw it on your whiteboard!
9 + 7 = \(\square\)
16 Nails
Job #2: Subtraction
Ben has 15 boards. He uses 6 boards for a shelf. How many boards are left?
Is this separating or joining?
15 - 6 = \(\square\)
9 Boards
Identify the Action!
JOINING
Numbers get
BIGGER
SEPARATING
Numbers get
SMALLER

Job B: Max had 18 wrenches. He lost 7 of them in the grass. How many does he have left?
