Power Play Teacher Guide Power Play Exponents
Teacher Facilitation Guide • High School Algebra
LEVEL 5
Objective
Students will apply multiple exponent properties (Product of Powers, Quotient of Powers, Power of a Power, Zero Exponent, and Negative Exponent) to simplify complex algebraic expressions, focusing on correct order of operations.

Simplification Stations Worksheet
Exponent Inventory Checklist
Station Cards (Printed)
Timing
Warm-up 5 min
Video Analysis 10 min
Main Activity 25 min
Closure 5 min
1. Warm-up: Property Recap (5 min)
Display the "Power Properties Scroll" from the slide deck. Conduct a lightning-round review where students identify the rule for a given example. Emphasize that Level 5 requires combining these tools.
2. Video Viewing: The Final Boss (10 min)
Play the video from 11:55 to 13:51 . This segment features the "Final Boss" problem.
Critical Pause Point:
"Pause at 12:17 before Justin reveals the solution. Have students attempt the problem in the 'Solo Challenge' box on their worksheet."
3. Main Activity: Simplification Stations (25 min)
Divide students into groups and rotate them through 4 stations. Each station presents a complex expression.
STATION 1: THE GATEKEEPER Focus on Order of Operations (PEMDAS) within fractions.
STATION 2: ZERO GRAVITY Focus on the Zero Exponent property nested in products.
STATION 3: THE RECIPROCAL RUN Focus on negative exponents moving across the fraction bar.
STATION 4: THE ULTIMATE COMBO A multi-step challenge similar to the video's final example.
4. Closure: Inventory Check (5 min)
Students complete the "Exponent Inventory" checklist. They must self-reflect on which properties they mastered and which still feel "locked." Use this as an exit ticket.
Pro-Tips for Differentiation
Scaffolding (Level 1 Players)
Provide a "Reciprocal Anchor Chart" showing visual arrows for moving negative exponents. Allow students to use highlighters to circle zero-exponent groupings before starting.
Extension (Pro Players)
Challenge students at Station 4 to create their own "Final Boss" problem that requires exactly 4 different properties to solve, along with a step-by-step key.

Product of Powers
\(x^a \cdot x^b = x^{a+b}\)
Quotient of Powers
\( \frac{x^a}{x^b} = x^{a-b} \)
Power of a Power
\((x^a)^b = x^{a \cdot b}\)
Zero Exponent
\(x^0 = 1\)
Negative Exponent
\(x^{-a} = \frac{1}{x^a}\)
Remember: A fully simplified expression has only positive exponents.

Mission Debrief
"You've survived the stations and faced the Final Boss. Now, audit your power levels. Check the boxes for the properties you can use with 100% accuracy. For those left unchecked, note what info you need to 'unlock' them."
Product of Powers
I can add exponents when bases are being multiplied.
\(x^a \cdot x^b\ = x^{a+b}\)
Quotient of Powers
I can subtract exponents when bases are being divided.
\(x^a / x^b = x^{a-b}\)
Power of a Power
I can multiply exponents when an exponent is raised to another.
\((x^a)^b = x^{a \cdot b}\)
Zero Exponent LEVEL 5 UNLOCKED
I know that any non-zero value raised to the 0 power equals 1.
\(x^0 = 1\)
Negative Exponent LEVEL 5 UNLOCKED
I can move negative exponents across the fraction bar to make them positive.
\(x^{-a} = 1/x^a\)
