Plot Point Teacher Guide Plot Point Lab
Teacher Facilitation Guide | Grade 4 Intervention
Standard: 4.MD.B.4
Learning Objective
Students will display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) on a line plot and use addition/subtraction of fractions to solve problems about the data.
Common Misconceptions
Scale Confusion: Treating the tick marks as whole numbers rather than fractional increments.
Missing Data: Forgetting to plot multiple "X"s for data points that occur more than once.
Operation Errors: Adding or subtracting the whole number labels rather than the fractional values represented by the "X"s.
Materials
Plot Point Slide Deck
Plot Point Lab Sheets (1 per student)
Plot Point Toolkit (X-stamps & Number Lines)
Fraction Cubes or strips (optional manipulatives)
Items to measure (pencils, scraps of paper, etc.)
Lesson Flow (30-40 Minutes)
Warm-Up (5m)
Review equivalent fractions. Ask: "If I have 1/2 of an inch, how many 4ths is that? How many 8ths?" Use the fraction number line in the Toolkit to show how 1/2, 2/4, and 4/8 align.
Model (10m)
The Blueprint Challenge: Project the "Block Tower" data. Model how to check each piece of data and place an "X" on the line plot. Teacher Script: "I see two blocks that are 1/4 inch. I find 1/4 on my line and place two X's, one on top of the other. Why do I stack them? That shows me there are two blocks with that same length."
Guided (15m)
Solving Problems: Transition to adding/subtracting. Ask: "What is the combined length of the shortest and longest blocks?" Guide students to find the X's furthest left and furthest right. Perform the addition together using the common denominator of 8.
Student Data: Have students measure 5 provided scraps of "blueprint paper" to the nearest 1/8 inch and create their own plot on the Lab Sheet.
Close (5m)
Distribute the Exit Slip. Review one key takeaway: "How does a line plot help us see which measurement is the most common?"
Answer Key & Scaffolding Tips
Lab Sheet: Part 1 (Block Tower)
Data: 1/4, 1/2, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 1/8, 1/2
Plot: 1/8 (1X), 1/4 (2X), 3/8 (1X), 1/2 (3X).
Shortest: 1/8 in.
Longest: 1/2 in.
Difference: 1/2 - 1/8 = 4/8 - 1/8 = 3/8 in.
Exit Slip
Data: 1/4, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/4
Plot: 1/4 (3X), 1/2 (1X), 3/4 (1X).
Most Common: 1/4 inch.
Total of 1/4s: 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 inch.
Scaffolding Support
Visuals:
Use the "X-stamps" from the Toolkit for students with fine motor difficulties or those who struggle with consistent spacing. Stamping helps maintain the scale of the Y-axis.
Vocabulary:
Emphasize Frequency (how often a length appears) and Outlier (a length that is much shorter or longer than the others).
Fraction Addition:
When adding multiple measurements (e.g., three 1/4 inch blocks), use the number line to "hop" by 1/4 segments to visualize the repeated addition.

THE BLUEPRINT CHALLENGE
Standard 4.MD.B.4
Warm Up: Scale Sense
Look at the measurements. Are they equivalent?
\( \frac{1}{2} \)
One Half
\( \frac{2}{4} \)
Two Fourths
\( \frac{4}{8} \)
Four Eighths
Tip: On our line plots, we always look for the smallest tick mark!
Anatomy of a Line Plot
1
The Scale
The number line showing measurements (1/2, 1/4, 1/8).
2
The Labels
What are we measuring? (Example: "Inches")
3
The "X" Marks
Each "X" represents ONE piece of data.
X
X
X
0 1/4 1/2 3/4 1
Pencil Length (Inches)
Modeling: The Block Tower
Data Set: Block Heights (Inches)
1/4 1/2 1/4 3/8 1/2 1/8 1/2
Count how many of each fraction.
Mark an "X" for every piece.
CRITICAL CHECK
Does your number of X's match the number of data points?
Solve with Data
Subtraction
What is the difference between the longest and shortest block?
\( \frac{1}{2} - \frac{1}{8} = ? \)
Addition
If we stacked all the 1/4 inch blocks, how tall would they be?
\( \frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{4} = ? \)
Common Denominators!
Change \( \frac{1}{2} \) to \( \frac{4}{8} \) to make subtracting easy.
Your Lab Turn
