The "Why"
Solid place-value understanding underpins all multi-digit operations, estimation, and number sense. Mastery ensures confidence when reading, writing, and comparing large numbers. This targeted session uses the "Concrete-Representational-Abstract" progression to solidify these concepts.
Teacher Preparation
1 Review Place Value Practice Sheet structure and answer key.
2 Familiarize yourself with the Digit Power Cards and ensure they are cut and ready.
3 Display the Place Value Power Map in a visible area or have it ready on the desk.
4 Preview the scaffolded questions on the Quest Prompt Cards to select appropriate level of challenge.
Instructional Sequence
Warm-Up 5 min
Warm-Up & Diagnostic Check
Show the Digit Power Cards to the student.
Ask the student to build a three-digit number (e.g., 4-7-2) and state its value aloud.
Observation: Note any misconceptions regarding digit order, naming conventions (e.g., "four seventy-two" vs "four hundred seventy-two"), or place-value shifts.
Modeling 10 min
Guided Modeling
Use the Place Value Power Map to illustrate each place value.
Model reading and writing a four-digit number (e.g., 5,239) using the digit cards.
Employ Quest Prompt Cards to ask scaffolded questions (e.g., "What is the value of the 5 in 5,234?").
Tip: Encourage "think-aloud" reasoning. Ask, "How do you know that digit is in the hundreds place?"
Practice 10 min
Scaffolded Independent Practice
Provide the Place Value Practice Sheet .
Student completes: reading numbers, writing dictated numbers, and comparing pairs.
Circulate and use Quest Prompt Cards to guide the student through challenging items without giving the answer.
Allow the student to self-check using the Place Value Answer Key at the end.
Reflection 5 min
Assessment & Reflection
Exit Ticket: Compare 3,659 and 3,695. Which is greater? Explain.
Review the response together immediately. Celebrate correct strategies and address remaining gaps.
