1 Sky Writing Pointer
Students extend full arm with "laser finger" locked. Stand up and engage shoulder muscles to trace big numbers in the sky.
2 Palm Tracing
Students trace strokes gently on their non-dominant palm to feel tactile friction and stroke start points from the top line.
3 The Green Dot Anchor
Mantra: "Where do numbers always start? At the top! Green means GO at the top line!" Never start from the bottom.

Place-value digit order, self-monitoring routines, and targeted interventions.
Left-to-Right Flow
The "Ten-Bundle Anchor" for Teen Numbers (11–20)
First graders frequently reverse teen digit order (writing 41 instead of 14 because they hear "four" first). Use this explicit mental model:
1. The "1" Always Arrives First
Every teen number has one full group of ten sitting in the front row. Write the numeral 1 on the left side first.
2. "Finger Gap" Spacing
Teach students to place their pointer fingertip as a spacer between two digits in a teen pair so they don't crash into each other.
3. Twenty's Special Shift
When reaching 20, celebrate filling two full ten-frames: "Two full packs of ten, and zero loose ones! Write 2 then 0."

Quick 3-Level Assessment Rubric
3 - Master Correct stroke origin (top), consistent baseline grounding, zero reversals in 0–20.
2 - Developing Starts from top with occasional bottom-start slip; 1–2 reversals caught with prompting.
1 - Emerging Frequent bottom-up strokes, digit inversions, needs physical hand-over-hand or raised lines.
Targeted Accommodations
Support: Provide tactile sandpaper numerals or playdough snakes prior to pencil tracing. Add a green dot sticker to the top left of their desk to reinforce left-to-right orientation.
Fine Motor Aid: Slip tracing worksheets inside clear dry-erase sleeves. Thick dry-erase markers reduce drag and finger fatigue for low-tone grips.
Extension: Challenge students to write numbers backward from 20 to 0 on blank lines, or write the missing numbers in a counting puzzle.
