Orchard Math Lesson Plan Grade 1 • Mathematics Duration: 60 Mins
🍎 Orchard Math Lesson Plan
Focus: Part-Part-Whole Relationships & Decomposing Within 10
Standards Alignment
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.B.4
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6
Learning Targets (SWBAT)
• Identify and break down any whole quantity up to 10 into two distinct parts.
• Model number bond relationships using two-color apple counters and ten-frames.
• Articulate math sentences orally: "__ is the whole, __ is one part, and __ is the other part."
Vocabulary
Whole: Total amount
Part: Pieces of the whole
Number Bond: Math map
Decompose: Break apart
Required Supplies:
Red/Green apple counters, ten-frame orchard mats, dry-erase markers.
Instructional Sequence: Part 1
Concrete to Representational to Abstract (CRA) instructional flow
1
The Orchard Hook & Problem Launch (10 Mins)
Whole Group Mat
Gather students on the carpet. Display a real or felt apple basket holding 7 apples (4 red and 3 green).
Teacher Script: "Farmer Mac went to the orchard and picked a basket of 7 crisp apples. But look closely! They aren't all the same flavor. How many are sweet red? Let's count: 1, 2, 3, 4! How many are tart green? 1, 2, 3! If we push the red and green apples together, what is our total whole? Seven!"
2
Explicit Modeling: The Number Bond Map (15 Mins)
I Do / Teacher Led
Visualizing the Structure:
Draw a giant number bond on the easel with two branch lines connecting into one large circle. Emphasize that the Whole always connects to both Parts . Show that changing the orientation (upside-down or sideways) does not change which circle is the whole!
Connecting to Ten-Frames:
Place 4 red counters on the top row of a giant ten-frame, then 3 green counters right beside them. Show how the 10-frame lets students immediately see that 7 is "5 and 2 more" or "4 and 3", reinforcing conservation of number.

3
Guided Practice: Partner Tree Shake (15 Mins)
We Do / Pairs
Partners receive a cup with 8 two-sided counters (red on one side, green on the other). Partner A shakes and spills the cup onto the Apple Harvest Activity Mat . Partner B sorts them into the Red Apple Basket and Green Apple Basket, fills the Ten-Frame, and writes the numbers in the bond circles.
Prompting: "How many apples fell total? How did you break them apart?"
4
Independent Practice: Apple Picking Sheet (12 Mins)
You Do / Individual
Students transition to desks to complete the Apple Picking Math Worksheet . Students independently solve number bond trees, color ten-frame grids to match given wholes, and write matching addition equations.
5
Closure & Orchard Math Talk (8 Mins)
Reflection
Gather in a circle. Hold up a card with Whole: 6 and one part visible (4 ). Have students show on their fingers the missing part! Ask: "How did knowing 4 + 2 = 6 help you solve the mystery?"
Differentiation Strategies
Support (Intervention): Keep wholes capped at 5 before progressing to 10. Use snap cubes physically locked together to model "snapping" the whole into two parts.
Extension (Challenge): Ask students to find all the ways to decompose the number 10 (0+10, 1+9, 2+8, etc.) and look for rainbow number patterns.
ELL/ML Support: Provide visual gesture cues: arms together for "whole", separate hands for "parts".
Misconceptions & Fixes
Confusing Parts with Whole: Students place the biggest number in a branch circle instead of the hub. Fix: Emphasize the lines as "paths". The whole is where both paths meet!
Ignoring Zero as a Part: Students believe a part cannot be 0. Fix: Show a basket with 5 red apples and 0 green apples: 5 and 0 makes 5.
Formative Checkpoints: Teacher Observation
1. Modeling: Accurately places counters onto ten-frame and separates into 2 color groups.
2. Recording: Writes numbers correctly in bond hub (whole) and leaves (parts).
3. Math Talk: Explains how the two parts combine to equal the total whole.
