What is Surface Area?
The Surface Area (SA) is the total area of all outer faces of a 3D shape. A net is a 2D flat pattern that folds up perfectly to create a 3D solid. For a cube, all 6 faces are identical squares!

Guided Exploration: Analyzing a Cube Net
Cube Net A (2x2 units per face) A B C D E F
Follow the steps below to find the surface area of the cube above:
Step A:
Identify the length of one side (s) of a square face:
The side length is unit squares.
Step B:
Calculate the Area of ONE single face (Face A):
Area = length × width
Area = × = sq. units
Step C:
Find the Total Surface Area (SA):
Since all 6 faces are identical squares, multiply the area of one face by 6.
SA = 6 × (Area of 1 face)
SA = 6 × = sq. units

Guided Practice: Cube Net B
Cube Net B A B C D E F
Show Your Calculations:
1. Count the side length of a square face on the grid:
Side length (s) = units
2. Find the area of one face (Face A):
Area = s × s = × = sq. units
3. Find the total surface area by multiplying by 6:
SA = 6 × = sq. units

Part 2: Rectangular Prisms
Understanding Rectangular Prism Nets
Unlike a cube, a rectangular prism has faces with different sizes. However, opposite faces are always congruent (identical)! A net will contain 3 matching pairs: Top/Bottom, Front/Back, and Left/Right.

Guided Exploration: 3 Matching Pairs
Prism Net A (4 × 2 × 3) A: Top C: Front B: Bottom D: Back E: L F: R
Find Area of Each Pair:
| Face Pair | Dimensions on Grid | Area Formula & Calculation |
|---|
| A & B | | |
| (Top / Bottom) | l = 4, w = 2 | |
| 1 Face: 4 × 2 = 8 sq. units | | |
| Both: 8 × 2 = 16 sq. units | | |
|
| C & D
(Front / Back) | l = 4, h = 3 |
1 Face: 4 × 3 =
Both: × 2 =
|
| E & F
(Left / Right) | w = 2, h = 3 |
1 Face: 2 × 3 =
Both: × 2 =
|
Total SA (Sum of all 3 Pairs):
16 + + =

Independent Practice: Prism Net B
Prism Net B A C B D E F
Independent Calculations:
1. Pair A & B (Top & Bottom):
Area = 2 × ( × ) = sq. units
2. Pair C & D (Front & Back):
Area = 2 × ( × ) = sq. units
3. Pair E & F (Left & Right):
Area = 2 × ( × ) = sq. units
Total Surface Area:
sq. units

Key Teaching Tips & Common Misconceptions
- Misconception: Students often count grid lines (junctions) instead of grid squares. Emphasize counting the actual unit squares along one edge.
- Strategy: Encourage students to check off or label each face as they add it to ensure they don't miss or double-count any faces.
