Total (Product)
Think of the multiplication symbol (× ) as the words "groups of". So 3 × 4 means 3 groups of 4 !
Both numbers multiplied are called factors, and the answer is called the product.

What is an Array?
An array arranges objects in straight, equal rows (side to side) and columns (up and down).
Multiplication Rule
Rows × Columns = Total Items
3 rows of 5 is 5 + 5 + 5 = 15!
Pro Tip: Arrays make it easy to see multiplication without counting one by one!

Focus Skill Equal Groups & Arrays
Materials Needed Slides, Counters, Sheet
Grouping Whole Class • Pairs • Indiv.
Core Learning Objectives
Conceptual Understanding: Represent multiplication as repeated addition of equal-sized groups.
Equation Translation: Express arrangements with the notation: [Number of groups] × [Items per group] = Total .
Array Models: Connect rows (horizontal) and columns (vertical) to factor pairs and total products.
Instructional Arc & Time Guide
10 Min
Hook: The Counting Dilemma (Slides 1–2)
Show three bags of apples. Ask: "Who can count all these apples the fastest?" Have a student count one by one, another skip-count by 4s (\(4, 8, 12\)), and demonstrate how repeated addition (\(4+4+4\)) leads to multiplication (\(3 \times 4\)).
15 Min
Direct Instruction: Groups & Arrays (Slides 3–5)
Teach the "groups of" reading for the \(\times\) symbol. Transition to arrays: distinguish rows (side-to-side) from columns (up-and-down). Model counting rows first: \(3 \text{ rows of } 5 = 15\).
10 Min
Guided Practice: Turn & Talk (Slide 6)
Display the fishbowl slide. Partners discuss: What is the repeated addition sentence? What is the multiplication equation? Have 2–3 pairs share their mathematical reasoning with the class.
20 Min
Independent Worksheet & Small Group Intervention
Distribute Multiply Machine Worksheet . Students work independently on Page 1 (Equal Groups) and Page 2 (Arrays & Scenarios). Pull struggling students for manipulative support (counters and ten-frames).
5 Min
Debrief & Exit Check
Review Part 5 Challenge question: Commutative property preview. Ask: "Why is multiplication faster than adding one by one?"

High-Impact Teacher Questioning Scripts
To Prompt Conceptual Thinking:
"Can we multiply if one bowl has 3 fish and another bowl has 4 fish? Why do all groups have to be equal?"
Key Idea: Multiplication requires equal-sized sets.
To Connect Addition to Multiplication:
"In the problem \(4 + 4 + 4\), which number is being repeated? How many times is it repeated? How do we write that with \(\times\)?"
Key Idea: The first number counts the repeats.
To Clarify Array Structure:
"Look at your rows. Are rows like the lines in a notebook (horizontal) or the columns of a tall building (vertical)?"
Key Idea: Rows go across; columns stand tall.
To Deepen Real-World Transfer:
"If you had 6 bicycles, how would you find the total number of wheels without counting every tire?"
Key Idea: \(6 \times 2 = 12\) is instant and efficient.
Common Student Misconceptions & How to Fix Them
Misconception
What the Student Does
Corrective Intervention
Adding Factors
Writes \(3 \times 4 = 7\) instead of \(12\).
Physically build 3 cups with 4 counters in each cup. Count all counters together (\(12\)).
Confusing Rows & Columns
Calls vertical columns "rows" or counts total items instead of rows.
Use gestures: sweep hand flat for "row" and point down for "column". Draw boxes around each horizontal row.
Unequal Grouping
Tries to multiply when groups are not identical (e.g., \(3 + 4 + 5\)).
Emphasize the word EQUAL . Ask: "Is it fair if your friend gets 5 and you get 3? Multiplication is always fair groups."
Tiered Differentiation Plan
Support / Intervention
Provide physical small cups or paper plates and counters. Have students place actual objects into cups before drawing on the worksheet. Stick to factors \(2, 3,\) and \(5\).
On-Level Practice
Complete the worksheet as structured. Encourage students to explain their models out loud using the sentence frame: "I drew __ groups of __ because..."
Extension / Challenge
Ask students to find two different arrays that yield the same product (e.g., \(2 \times 6 = 12\) and \(3 \times 4 = 12\)). Introduce the Commutative Property with grid rotation.
