Level 3: High Frustration

Level 1: Ready & Calm
When the Mountain Weather Turns...
Frustration is a natural reaction to hard math problems. When your thermometer hits Level 3 or 4, deploy these three tools:
Box Breathing (4-4-4-4)
Inhale for 4s, hold for 4s, exhale for 4s, hold for 4s. Reset your brain chemistry.
The 2-Minute Pause
Put down your pencil. Write "Pause" on your sheet. Step back to find a new route.
Self-Regulation is your ultimate survival shield. Slide 2 of 6
Expedition Crew
Collaborative Problem Solving
No One Climbs Alone
Mountaineers rely on specialized roles to navigate complex trails. Your math crew is structured for total survival.
1. Navigator
Keeps track of map directions (constraints) and pacing. Asks: "Are we meeting all the requirements?"
Map & Path
2. Trailblazer
Starts ideas, proposes formulas, and sketches the designs. Asks: "What if we try this pattern first?"
Ideation
3. Anchor
Verifies calculations, double-checks arithmetic, and catches bugs. Asks: "Can we prove that calculation is right?"
Validation
4. Reporter
Speaks for the team during group share-outs and reviews. Asks: "How should we explain our climb to the class?"
Delivery
Establish your role now. Everyone participates, everyone protects. Slide 3 of 6
Mission Parameters
The Summit Challenge
Challenge: Basecamp Alpha Layout
Your team must design a rectangular research basecamp at an altitude of 15,000 feet. There are strict structural rules to ensure safety against avalanche shifts:
Rule 1: The total Area must be exactly 180 square meters .
Rule 2: To block high-speed wind, the Perimeter must be less than 64 meters .
Rule 3: Anchor stakes cost \$12 per meter of perimeter. Your team budget is exactly \$700 .
The Grid Coordinates
Map out on your Sheet! Find the Dimensions (W & L)
Be prepared to hit a "Struggle Wall"! This is where the magic happens.
Area = L x W • Perimeter = 2(L + W) • Cost = Perimeter x \$12 Slide 4 of 6
Crest View
Growth Mindset
Mistakes are Mountain Anchors
In climbing, an anchor is something that holds you in place after a slip so you can find a better foothold. In math, errors are exactly the same thing.
The Slip (Fixed Mindset)
"This calculation failed, I'm bad at fractions and I want to quit."
Result: Absolute block; team shuts down; panic meter maxes.
The Anchor (Growth Mindset)
"This configuration overshot our \$700 budget limit. Let's see why..."
Result: Mathematical pivot; team recalibrates width and length.
🚨 Active Listening Drill: "I agree with your calculation, and I also noticed..."
No shame in falling—only in refusing to search for the next handhold. Slide 5 of 6

Goal Setting & Reflection
The Summit Log
Before your team departs, log your data. A true mountaineer studies their performance to survive the next peak.
1
Identify your personal mathematical superpower.
2
Review your group's "Favorite Mistake."
3
Set one clear habit for your next high-stress math task.

TEACHER OPERATIONS MANUAL
INTEGRATED MATH + SEL
Expedition Briefing
This lesson targets middle-grade geometric constraints (Area/Perimeter) while teaching crucial self-regulation mechanisms to cope with cognitive frustration. By wrapping math and SEL in a cohesive "Mountain Expedition" theme, students view challenge as terrain to navigate rather than a threat to their intelligence.
Pacing Guide (60 Min)
1. Ascent Preparation: 10m
2. Crew Assembly: 05m
3. The Summit Trial: 25m
4. Anchor Analysis: 10m
5. Debrief Log: 10m
Mathematical Focus
Solve complex multi-step optimization problems using formulas for area (\(A = L \times W\)) and perimeter (\(P = 2L + 2W\)) under real-world financial constraints.
SEL Integration Focus
Monitor and rate personal stress using a Frustration Thermometer ; apply self-regulation breathing patterns and execute structured peer team roles.
Navigation & Instructional Script
Slides 1 & 2: Mental Altitude & The Panic Meter Time: 10 mins
Teacher Talk: "Mountaineers don't panic when an ice storm hits; they use their gear. In math, hard problems can make us feel like we're freezing. Let's look at the Frustration Thermometer. Where does your body feel a Level 3? Do you grip your pencil tighter? Does your chest feel tight? Let's practice a Box Breath to lower our core reading before we start our climb."
💡 Facilitation Tip: Guide the class in 3 physical cycles of Box Breathing (Inhale 4s, Hold 4s, Exhale 4s, Hold 4s) together.
Slide 3: Crew Assembly & Role Play Time: 5 mins
Teacher Talk: "In a rope team, everyone has a specific function to ensure the entire group summit safely. If the Navigator isn't checking the map, the team wanders off. Assign roles in your group of 3 or 4: Navigator, Trailblazer, Anchor, and Reporter. Read your responsibilities on Slide 3 carefully."
💡 Facilitation Tip: Provide role tags or badges. Ensure students physically declare their role on their individual worksheets.
Slide 4: Launching the Summit Challenge Time: 25 mins
Teacher Talk: "Here is your mission: Basecamp Alpha. To survive, you must satisfy three environmental rules. This is a multi-step design task. Expect to fail on your first attempt—that is a necessary part of finding the route. Keep tracking your thermometer."

The Basecamp Layout Constraints
Your crew must design a rectangular shelter area. Select physical dimensions Length (L) and Width (W) that fully meet three safety parameters:
1. TARGET AREA Exactly 180 m²
2. MAXIMUM PERIMETER Less than 64 m
3. CREW BUDGET Max $700 ($12/meter)
