The Touch-and-Count Rule
Slide 3 of 8
How to Count Stars:
- Point at the first star
- Say "One"
- Move to the next star
- Say "Two"
"Every object gets exactly one touch and one number name!"
Let's Try It Together:
1 one
2 two
3 three
4 four
We counted 4 stars. The number word is four.
Teacher Prompt: Have students touch their desk as they count 1, 2, 3, 4 together.
The Awesome Ten Frame
Slide 4 of 8
Why use a Ten Frame?
A ten frame is a box with 10 spaces. It helps us see groups of numbers without starting from 1 every time!
Look at the frame on the right:
It is completely full on the top row (5) and has 2 on the bottom. That is 7!
Can you see 7?
7 seven
Quick Question: How many empty spots are left on the frame? (3!)
Double Frames: 11 to 20
Slide 5 of 8
Let's Read This Number:
14 fourteen
Let's Crack the Pattern!
When numbers get larger than 10, we fill up one full frame (10) and start filling the second frame!
Math Equation:
10 + 4 = 14
Ten plus four equals fourteen.
Active Practice: Clap once for the full frame, then count the extra dots with finger taps!
Cosmic Matching Game
Slide 6 of 8
Can you match this frame to its correct number word?
Count: 8
seven
eight
nine
Teacher Tip: Ask students to hold up fingers to show their vote! Word "eight" is the match!
Galaxy Partner Challenge
Slide 7 of 8
Partner Talk:
Turn to your galaxy partner. Work together to answer these two starry questions:
- What letters make the sound at the start of "three"?
- What letters make the sound at the start of "fifteen"?
Why speak words?
Saying the words out loud helps your brain match the sounds to the letters on your papers!
Discussion Pacing: Give students 2 minutes to chat, then ask 2 volunteers to share.
