4 Students • 30-Min Sessions
Intervention Club Model
This 4-session sequence provides intensive, low-distraction small group support. Each session is broken into high-impact segments: Visual Hook (5m) , Direct Instruction (10m) , Guided Practice (10m) , and Progress Check (5m) .
Session 1: Coin Collectors (Coins & Values)
30 Min
Objective: Correctly identify Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter and state their values.
Visual Hook
Introduce coins on the slide deck. Discuss physical features (color, size, edges).
Guided Practice
Students sort tactile or cut-out coins onto the Coin Sorting Mats .
Script Prompt
"Look closely at the edge. Is it smooth or rough like a zipper?"
Session 2: Shape Detectives (2D Properties)
30 Min
Objective: Identify and trace circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, and rhombus based on side and vertex count.
Visual Hook
Compare a circle and oval; then a square, rectangle, and rhombus using high-contrast slides.
Guided Practice
Trace and count vertices using the Shape Safari Poster as a shared guide.
Script Prompt
"A rhombus is like a square that got pushed slightly on its side! Let's count corners."
Scaffolding & Differentiation Guidelines
For Students Needing Support:
Use real tactile coins or plastic shapes alongside the visual paper mats.
Provide pre-drawn starting dots for shape tracing.
Focus on one coin pair at a time (e.g., penny vs. dime first).
For Students Ready for Extension:
Have them write the cent symbol (¢) next to coin values.
Ask them to find shapes inside classroom items.
Introduce coin combinations (e.g., nickel + penny = 6¢).

Sessions 3 & 4
Session 3: Make-a-Ten Addition
30 Min
Objective: Decompose a single-digit addend to make a ten, then add the remainder.
Step-by-Step Task Analysis (Example: 8 + 5)
1 Find the Partner
"How many to make 10 from 8?" Need 2.
2 Split Second
"Split 5 into 2 and 3 ."
3 Make the 10
Combine 8 and 2 to get 10 .
4 Add Remainder
Add 10 + 3 = 13 .
Session 4: Get-to-Ten Subtraction
30 Min
Objective: Decompose a subtrahend to subtract back to ten, then subtract the remainder.
Step-by-Step Task Analysis (Example: 13 - 5)
1 Find the Ones
"Look at ones in 13." Need to lose 3.
2 Split Subtrahend
"Split 5 into 3 and 2 ."
3 Drop to 10
Subtract 13 minus 3 to get 10 .
4 Subtract Rest
Subtract 10 - 2 = 8 .
Core Verbal Prompting Scripts
Addition Decomposing Script: "We have 8. It's so hungry to become a 10! It needs exactly 2 crumbs. We'll steal 2 crumbs from the 5. If we take 2 away from 5, how many crumbs are left over? Let's check with our ten-frame!"
Subtraction Decomposing Script: "We are starting at 13. We want to land safely on our base camp: 10! How many steps backward do we take to land on 10? Yes, 3 steps! We split our subtract-monster 5 into 3 steps and 2 steps. Land on 10 first, then take the last 2 steps!"

Session 3
Secret Agent Mission
Operation: Ten Makers Addition
Today we learn the super strategy of making a 10 to add big numbers together!
Focus Strategy: Decomposing to Make a Ten (Addition) Intervention Slide Deck
The Problem
Stage 1
\[8 + 5 = \text{?}\]
Adding \(8 + 5\) in our heads is tricky. Let's make it easier by turning the 8 into a 10 first!
First Frame: 8
Need 2 more to make a full 10!
Look closely: How many empty spaces are in the first ten-frame? Slide 2
The Strategy
Stage 2
Step 2: Split the 5
Let's split the 5 into 2 and 3 !
Why 2? Because 8 needs exactly 2 to make a ten!

Step 3 & 4: Make 10 & Add Remainder
\[10 + 3 = 13\]
We combined our 8 and 2 to get a full 10 . Then, we added the 3 leftovers. So, \(8 + 5 = 13\)! Easy!
