Objective
Students will identify 3D shapes (sphere, cube, cylinder, cone) and match them to real-world grocery items through visual and tactile exploration.
Prep Checklist
- Gather Containers: Oranges (spheres), tissue boxes (cubes), soup cans (cylinders), party hats/cones.
- Sorting Station: 4 baskets with the "Grocery Shape Labels" attached.
- Tech Check: Ensure "Shape Grocery Slides" and video are ready.
- Extension: Prep Play-Doh tubs at the back table.

Video Pause Points
0:45 (Sphere): "Why doesn't a sphere have any corners? How does this make it useful for sports?"
1:25 (Cube): "Can you find something in this room that is a cube?"
3:01 (Cylinder): Discuss how this shape rolls compared to a cube. Does it have corners?
3:30 (Cone): "Both cones and cylinders have circles. How are they different?"
Activity: The Grocery Sort
Guiding Questions
- "If you close your eyes and feel this, does it have any points?"
- "Would this item roll or slide across the table?"
- "How many flat faces can you count on this box?"
Teacher Tip
Watch for students confusing Rectangular Prisms with Cubes. Remind them that a Cube is like a perfectly square box on every single side!
Support
Provide a "cheat sheet" (one of the labels) at the table. Have students match the item directly to the picture on the label before putting it in the basket.
Challenge
Ask students to find "Hidden Shapes" in the room that weren't in the grocery bin (e.g., a glue stick as a cylinder, a globe as a sphere).
